Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 129 PM AKST Mon Feb 13 2017 .DISCUSSION... Models in decent agreement through 60 hours. Upper level rough persists over the West Coast through the end of the week. Upper level ridge over the Eastern and Central portion of the state will persist through at least the middle of the week before weakening and giving way to the trough over the West Coast that will push eastward. As the upper level ridge strengthens over the Central Interior tonight and Tuesday, winds will dramatically increase over the Alaska Range zones. Surface temperatures for much of the area will climb into the 30s. This will give way to the possibility of freezing rain over much of the Central and Eastern Interior, although significant liquid precipitation is not expected over a widespread area. Temperatures do not cool down aloft until around Wednesday. This is when the ridge begins to weaken and the downslope is not as strong. A decent amount of snowfall could fall in parts of the South slopes of the Brooks Range from Tuesday morning through Tuesday night. At this time we do not believe it would be warning criteria snow but certainly areas of 3 to 5 inches may not be too uncommon. Winds in the Brooks Range and Alaska Range will cause travel issues although the Brooks Range will not have the temperatures hovering around the freezing mark. The Arctic Coast will be the most benign part of the forecast area with not much of any concerns with the exception of some rogue fog patches. The West Coast will see the winds persist as they are now with several areas hoovering around advisory level winds but not yet reaching it. Warm moist air continues to flow north into the interior and it will send temperatures today into the 30s above and that will produce slippery road conditions as frost develops on the paved surfaces. Temperatures in the Tanana Valley east of Tanana and from Fox south will rise into the 30s with temperatures in the remainder of the area north and west to the Yukon River well above zero. Highs in the Fairbanks area will be in the mid 30s with a few areas to the south approaching 40 degrees. Road surfaces remain frozen and as the warm air moves over them frost will develop, especially on low traffic and shaded roads, creating slick driving conditions.
