Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
Pattern aloft: The 10/00Z 500 dm pattern continued to show
elongated long wave troughing which runs from the Chukchi Sea
eastward to near the western CONUS. Several strong short waves
were embedded within this trough, the first of which was running
through northwest Alaska stretching from Demarcation Point to near
Golovin. A second short wave was moving across the Gulf of Alaska
early this morning, with a 503 dam low located around 300 miles
south of Anchorage as of 10/00Z. A 545 dam high was located over
eastern Siberia, with highly amplified ridging extending
southward across the Bering Sea and central Aleutians. South of
this high was a 511 dam low located near 48N 165E.

Surface: The 10/06Z analysis shows 979 mb low in the Gulf located
around 500 miles south of Cordova. Gradually weakening 1032 mb low
remains over eastern Siberia, with surface ridge stretching
southeastward across the Bering Sea and east across the North
Slope. Low pressure at 995 mb was seen over the high Arctic near
80 N 154 W.

Models: The 09 00/06Z deterministic models remain in good
agreement through this weekend into next week. Short waves over
northwest AK and over the Gulf will merge to form a 493 dam low to
be located over the eastern Kenai Peninsula by 06Z this evening.
Yet another short wave will drop down from the Beaufort Sea
overnight and merge with the existing broader low over mainland
Alaska. H5 heights look to bottom out around 488 dm over northern
Alaska by Saturday afternoon, with H85 temps falling to around
-24 to -30C. This bout of cold looks to range through the weekend,
before strong ridging begins to build back into the west coast of
Canada/CONUS by Sunday night which will retrograde west into the
eastern part of the state Monday; causing the cold air to retreat
back into the AK west coast and North Slope.

North Slope: Approaching short wave and associated area of low
pressure will drift south from the high Arctic toward the Arctic
Coast today. Replaced the Wind Chill Advisory in zones 203 and
204 for a Winter Weather Advisory due to snow and blowing snow
with visibilities dropping to around a half mile or less here.
Extended this winter advisory and remaining wind chill advisories
for the North Slope zones until midnight, as winds look to remain
at or above 15 mph into this evening. Will have to watch Kaktovik
today to see if they receive a period heavier falling snow, which
would likely result in another ground blizzard due to enhanced
barrier winds. At this point, best chance for lowest visibilities
looks to remain to the west of Kaktovik. Once this last wave
moves over the North Slope, the wave shears out with diminishing
winds and just some lingering flurries over the area by Sunday
into next Monday.

West Coast and West Interior: Main impacts here will be continued
low wind chills for western and northwestern Alaska. Added zones
210 and the Bering Strait Coast portion of zone 213 to the
advisories for wind chills as cold as 55 below. Winds are expected
to gradually subside beginning this afternoon, as pressure
gradient weakens here with weakening high pressure over east
Siberia. For places inland, lighter winds and clear/clearing skies
will allow for very cold temperatures to settle into the west
Interior, with valley level temperatures falling between 30 to 40
below and daytime highs struggling to break 20 below. Temperatures
look to moderate by Sunday night into Monday as heights aloft rise
with building ridge.

Interior: Light snow and flurries will linger for the southeast
Interior today, gradually diminishing this morning over the
middle Tanana Valley as cyclonic flow lingers over the region.
Otherwise temperatures are expected to fall between 30 to 40 below
by tonight and Saturday night for areas seeing clear skies with
daytime highs only getting to around 20 below. At least patchy ice
