Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 348 AM AKST Tue Nov 21 2017 .DISCUSSION... Models...For the very short term, around 24 hours, the models still having the same issues with diverging beyond that. The divergence is not quite as bad, but it will still have an impact on conditions that will effect the West Coast and Northwest Arctic Coast. Will primarily use a blend of the GFS and Canadian models again for the short term. The 21/00Z solutions did initialize okay against the 21/06Z surface analysis, but the low near the Gulf of Anadyr was about 4 mb weaker than the models and the high over the Yukon Territory was about 3 mb stronger. Coastal Flood guidance has remained consistent the last few runs and water levels in Norton Sound are expected to be a few feet higher than the storm a month or so ago. Aloft...at 500 hpa...A 506 dam low 400 nm northwest of Point Barrow will move west. A 505 dam low over MacKenzie Bay will move southeast in to Canada. A 520 dam low over the northeast Pacific has troughing extending north to Yakutat that will persist into Wednesday then moving east. Ridging from a 588 dam high in the north Pacific extends northeast south of the Alaska Peninsula over Kodiak Island to Talkeetna to Anaktuvuk Pass to Wainwright, then northwest. By This evening it will be over the AlCan Border to Demarcation Point then northwest over the Arctic. A strong trough associated with a 505 dam low over the Western Chukchi Sea will extend southeast over Shishmaref to Bethel to Sand Point. By late this evening the low will be 200 nm west of Point Lay and the trough will lie from Point Lay to Ruby to Seldovia, and by Wednesday morning the low is still about 200 nm west of Point Lay with the trough extending over Point Lay to the Central Brooks Range to Tanana to Homer. By Wednesday morning the trough will lie from the low which will be over the Arctic Plain to Bettles to Fairbanks to Cordova. The trough will move over the Yukon Territory early Thursday. At 850 hpa...Temperatures over the forecast area will be between -5C and -20C through Friday. Surface...969 mb low has moved to the western Chukchi Sea and the weather front lies from Point Lay to Koyuk to Dillingham. Leeside troughing has developed north of the Brooks and Alaska Ranges. High pressure remains over the Upper Yukon Flats, the Copper River Basin, and over the Yukon Territory. The weather front will move east to lie from Cape Lisburne to Tanana to Talkeetna. As the front continues east weak troughing will remain over the interior with high pressure over the southern Yukon Territory. The low over the Northwest Arctic coast will slowly move north to 100 northwest of Wainwright by Wednesday afternoon at 982 mb with trough extending east over the Arctic Coast to a 1002 mb low near Demarcation Point. A weak ridge axis will move over the Eastern Bering Sea this evening, then moves inland and merges with weak ridging south of the Alaska Range. A 999 mb low developing in the north Pacific this morning will move to the Central Bering Sea by Wednesday morning at 978 mb, then over the southwest mainland by Wednesday evening at 967 mb before moving southeast across the Alaska Peninsula into the northeast Pacific. The low north of Wainwright will become quasi stationary, then move southeast over Point Barrow by Thursday evening, then east to the Beaufort Sea Friday night. Strong pressure gradient across the Brooks Range will start to relax Tuesday evening. It will tighten back up a bit as the low moves to the north of the Range Friday. Gap winds in the Alaska Range will drop off early this afternoon as the gradient relaxes. The Tanana Valley Jet will continue to blow into the evening before shutting off. The gusty winds in the upper Yukon River Valley will continue through Wednesday before dying off as the high over the Yukon Territory moves a bit south. Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...Blizzard to near Blizzard conditions for most of the area today. Strongest winds will be from Point Barrow west with 35 to 45 mph gusting to 70 mph on the northwest Arctic Coast. Low ceilings will prevail with some light snow. Blowing snow reducing visibility to 1/2 mile or less over much of the Arctic. Temperatures slightly warmer. Heavy snow in parts of the Brooks Range as well. West Coast and Western Interior...Blizzard conditions over much of the area north of Shaktoolik today. Near blizzard conditions to the south. Strong winds today 25 to 45 mph with some areas gusting to 65 mph. Conditions will improve tonight and tomorrow morning as the low moves north and the front moves inland. Snowfall today in the Kobuk and Noatak Valleys will range from 2 to 15 inches with the heaviest snow north of Kiana and north of Noatak. Heavy snow in the northern Nulato Hills with 4 to 12 inches. The next system that will move over the southwest mainland will spread heavy snows over the Lower Yukon Delta with up to a foot of snow in the area Wednesday. Winds will generally be light in the valleys.
