Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...

Models...Not much change since yesterday, still good agreement
into the midrange, and solutions are similar in the extended
periods. 01/00Z surface solutions initialized well against the
01/06Z analysis. Clearing and cooler temperatures in the Interior
and Arctic as the ridge moves east today. The ridge rolls over
with a much more active pattern developing for Thursday and Friday
as zonal flow develops and a series of shortwaves moves across the
Arctic.

Aloft...At 500 hpa...A 578 dam high has moved southeast over
McGrath this morning with the primary axis extending north over
Wainwright into the Arctic. The high continues to move south over
the Semidi Islands this evening with the axis rotating to extend
northeast over Kuparuk, then north over the Arctic. A shortwave
will develop over the Siberian Coast this evening and move over
the western Arctic and Northwest Arctic Coast by Thursday morning.
As the ridge continues to roll over the shortwave will move east
across the Arctic to be over 150W, and over the Beaufort Sea by
Friday morning with the shortwave dragging over the eastern Arctic
Coast. A second shortwave will move over the West Coast Thursday
evening and move east to the Central Interior by Friday morning,
and the Eastern Interior late Friday morning. At 850 hpa...Ridge
continues to build and the zero isotherm lies from Yakutat to
Sutton to Arctic Village to Nuiqsut and north into the Arctic
before turning to lie over the central Chukchi Sea and Bering
Strait to Nunivak Island. By Thursday morning the ridge is rolling
over and it will lie from Yakutat to Fort Yukon to Nunivak Island
as cold air pushes it south.

Surface...A 1042 mb high has moved over the Upper Yukon Flats with
a 1041 mb high over Eagle, and a 1037 mb high over Bristol Bay,
a 1035 mb high north of Barter Island, and a 1030 mb high over the
northeast Arctic this morning. A weather front is moving northeast
across the Chukchi Sea over the northwest Arctic Coast this
morning and will move east across the Arctic and into the Beaufort
Sea by Thursday morning. A second weather front will move to the
northwest Arctic Coast by Thursday morning and move east across
the Arctic Friday as the high pressure over mainland Alaska is
pushed south. A strong pressure gradient will develop over the
Brooks Range this evening and persist into Thursday morning
producing strong South winds near passes. In the eastern Alaska
Range the strong gradient develops a little later this evening as
leeside troughing develops north of the Range, and it will
persist through early Thursday morning producing strong south
winds near passes.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...Cloudy with occasional light snow
or flurries. Areas of Fog reducing visibility at times. Generally
southwest winds 10 to 20 mph except south winds gusting to around
35 mph near passes.

West Coast and Western Interior...Mostly clear this morning with
some areas of fog reducing visibility. Mostly clear later this
morning over most of the area, then increasing clouds in the
coastal areas as the ridge moves further east. A weather front
will move to the central Bering Sea this evening, then drag north
and northeast over the Chukchi Sea. The high pressure will be
pushed south a bit Thursday and southwest flow will bring more
clouds and rain/snow into the Norton Sound, Seward Peninsula, and
Kotzebue Sound regions. Southeast winds becoming southwest to 15
mph along the coast and north of the Seward Peninsula. Light and
variable winds inland and over the Lower Yukon Delta.
Temperatures slightly warmer.

Central and Eastern Interior...Some Freezing drizzle this morning
in the Fairbanks to North Pole corridor with patchy fog. Clearing
by late morning. Some cloudy condition to the north and east of
Fairbanks this morning with clearing as the day goes on and the
high moves east. Mostly clear over the Central and Eastern
Interior tonight with the exception of areas to the north where
some clouds will push south as the ridge moves south. Winds
generally light and variable except gusts to around 35 mph in the
Eastern Alaska Range tonight.

...Very Slippery Conditions Continuing Today...

Light snow is occuring from east of Fairbanks. Up to one quarter
inch of snow is possible, which is providing a light dusting to
cover up areas of ice and making them hard to see, but also very
slippery.

There are also areas of freezing fog and freezing drizzle with
visibility of on half mile or less. This will keep conditions
slippery in most areas.

Precipitation is expected to end and clouds area expected to
thin this afternoon. Temperatures will warm to near freezing
this afternoon keeping icy roads, sidewalks and parking lots
slippery through this afternoon.

taper off by late afternoon. New snow accumulation will be less
than one quarter inch. A light dusting of snow has covered up
areas of ice, and is making the ice hard very slippery.

Clouds will start to break up in the late afternoon. Temperatures
will warm to near freezing this afternoon keeping icy roads,
sidewalks and parking lots slippery.
