.DISCUSSION...
A strong low in the Bering Sea will bring active weather to much
of the area through Friday. This system is the main forecast
concern for this shift. The models are in good agreement in the
short term and generally initialize well.

Aloft, at 500 mb, an upper level ridge that stretches from north
of Point Lay to McGrath will quickly move to the east today and by
tomorrow morning the axis of the ridge will be along the Canadian
Border. A 503 dam low 220 NM SW of of Cape Chukotskiy will move
into the Gulf of Anadyr this evening before westward into Russia
during the day on Friday where it will remain quasi-stationary
into the weekend slowly weakening in place. A trough associated
with this low will push into the west coast of Alaska today and
will push eastward into the Interior tonight into Friday. A
trough associated with a 504 dam low over the Canadian
Archipelago will spread westward along the Arctic Coast of Alaska
Saturday night into Sunday. Early next week this low will move
westward and the trough will move southward resulting in cooler
air aloft spreading southward across northern Alaska.

At the surface, a 959 mb low 400 NM WNW of St. Matthew Island
will move into the Gulf of Anadyr at 966 mb by late this evening
and will move westward into Russia during the day on Friday. An
occluded front associated with low currently stretches from the
low to south of Wrangell Island to the Bering Strait to the Yukon
Delta. By this afternoon the front will stretch from the low to
south of Wrangell Island to Point Hope to McGrath. At 4 AM on
Friday the front will stretch from the low to just north of
Wrangell Island to Wainwright to Bettles to Fairbanks and by
Friday afternoon the front will stretch from North of Wrangel
Island to Barrow to Eagle where the front will fade out in place.

West Coast and Western Interior: A weather front will bring strong
southeasterly winds to much of the west coast today along with
rain.  Areas along the coast south of the Bering Strait will see
gusts in the 40 to 50 mph range early today. Winds will diminish
by this afternoon after the front goes through. The winds will
then become more southwesterly and increase this evening as the
low moves north. The southwesterly winds will be over an ideal
fetch for coastal flooding. Coastal flood warnings are out for
coastal areas from the Bering Sea south. Please see the Coastal
flood warning products for more specific details for more
information. Several high wind warning are out for today for north
of the Bering Strait where gust up to 60 mph are possible. Winds
north of the Bering Strait will die down this evening after the
front passes but will pick up again tomorrow as the low move
northward. North of the Bering Strait the strong winds will
create some high surf and thus a number of high surf advisories
are in place. Please see the high surf advisory products for the
latest information about this. The precipitation associated with
the front will push into the western Interior by this afternoon.
This system is generally warm, so most locations will see rain. In
the northern portions of zones 208 and 217 the precip will be
mainly snow. Snow accumulation in the aforementioned areas will
mainly be around 2 to 4 inches.

Central and eastern Interior: The aforementioned front will
spread eastward tonight and Friday. Above 2000 feet the
precipitation will fall as snow and bring 2 to 4 inches of
accumulation from tonight through Friday. In valley locations,
such as Fairbanks, precipitation will fall mainly as rain,
although it may mix with snow at times. No snow is expected to
accumulate in valleys. Hillsides above 1000 feet could see an inch
of snow. Southerly gap winds will develop in Alaska Range passes
today with gusts up to 30 mph.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range: Strong easterly winds are expected
to develop today across the Arctic Coast as the front moves
northward. I opted to issue a High Wind Warning on this shift for
the Barrow area. As the front move north and east it will bring
snowfall. North of the Brooks Range snowfall with this system
will range from 1 to 2 inches. Southerly gap winds are expected to
develop in Brooks Range passes with gusts up to 50 mph.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None, but see west cost
section above for shorter term hazards.

Eastern Interior tonight and Friday. This storm is warmer than
the one on Tuesday. Above 2000 feet the precipitation will fall as
snow and bring 2 to 4 inches of accumulation from tonight through
Friday. This will make travel difficult over Summits of the
Steese and Elliott Highways late tonight into Friday. This could
also make travel difficult through the Alaska Range tonight and
Friday.

In valley locations, such as Fairbanks, precipitation will fall
mainly as rain, although it may mix with snow at times. No snow is
expected to accumulate in valleys. Hillsides above 1000 feet
could see an inch of snow.
