* WINDS...South winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 55 mph.

* TIMING...Winds will increase this afternoon and remain strong 
  through late evening. Winds will diminish after midnight.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
A relatively quiet weather pattern is expected for northern
Alaska for the next few days. Overall, the models are in good
agreement in the short term but start to diverge some when we get
out to Tuesday.

Aloft, at 500 mb, a 534 dam low currently just east of St.
Lawrence Island will weaken tonight. A 530 dam low just south of
Unalaska will very slowly move to the east through Tuesday night.
A ridge will start to build along the Canadian Border bringing in
a warmer airmass aloft for the eastern Interior. An upper level
ridge will develop over the western Bering Sea Sunday this ridge
will move west reaching the west coast of Alaska by Tuesday
morning. Behind this ridge is an upper low that looks to push into
Bristol Bay on Wednesday continuing eastward. This low will push
the ridge over the eastern Interior east into Canada.

At the surface, A ridge of high pressure will build over the
eastern Interior through Sunday. On Sunday night a trough will
develop just north of the Alaska Range running from McGrath to
Northway. A 1016 mb high 500 NM N of Barrow will be pushed to the
southeast by a front associated with a low northwest of Wrangel
Island. The high will be about 425 NM N of Barter Island by
Sunday Afternoon and about 500 NM NE of Barter Island by Monday
afternoon. A 1005 mb low just southeast of St. Lawrence Island
will weaken tonight as a weak ridge of high pressure builds into
the western Bering Sea.

Central and Eastern Interior: Relatively clear skies in the
eastern Interior will likely allow the morning low temperatures
on Sunday morning to be a few degrees cooler than Saturday
morning. This will be especially true for areas from Fairbanks
south and east where cloud cover will be lowest. For the Middle
Tanana Valley this will translate into temperatures in the upper
20s to lower 30s. Some spots around Fairbanks may see their first
frost of the season tonight. The relatively clear skies from
Fairbanks south and east will likely lead to some patchy fog,
particularly in river valleys. At this point I'm not anticipating
the fog to be nearly as dense or widespread as was seen on
Saturday. West of Fairbanks there will be a bit more cloud cover
so temperatures shouldn't be quite as cold as east of Fairbanks.
Temperatures will warm up a bit for Sunday night and Monday as
southerly flow aloft brings in warmer air. The Interior looks to
be mainly dry through Tuesday. A weather system looks to bring
some rainfall as it pushes from southeast to northwest across the
Interior Tuesday night into Wednesday; however the southerly flow
aloft may help to limit the potential for rain somewhat from
Fairbanks south to the Alaska Range due to downslope effects. The
southerly flow will also bring some gap winds to Alaska Range
passes at times through the weekend, although at this point the
wind speeds are expected to remain at sub-advisory levels. With
the trough devloping north of the Alaska Range on Monday we could
see somewhat stronger gap winds in Alaska Range passes, perhaps
approaching advisory levels in the eastern portion of the Alaska
Range.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range: Showers tonight along with some
fog and lower stratus tonight along the coast. The winds look to
turn southerly along the coast Sunday morning. This will likely
lead to clearing for coastal areas along with warmer temperatures.
The winds along the coast turn easterly late Sunday night and
Monday binging back the potential for areas along the coast from
Barrow east. Some scattered snow showers expected Monday night in
the Brooks Range although not really expecting any accumulation.

West Coast and Western Interior: The upper low sitting near St.
Lawrence Island will bring showers to much of the west coast and
western Interior tonight into early tomorrow. As the low
dissipates tomorrow the showers will gradually come to an end.
relatively quiet weather is expected Monday through Tuesday night
with mainly dry conditions expected. Some rainfall will push into
the western Interior from the east Wednesday.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

...Frost Tonight in Low Lying Areas...

Frost is expected in low lying areas tonight, including
Fairbanks. Temperatures in the upper 20s will occur tonight in
low lying areas such North Pole, Two Rivers, Goldstream Valley,
and Creamer's Field. Most locations will be several degrees
colder tonight than they were Saturday morning.

People with gardens in low lying areas who wish to avoid frost
damage will need to bring temperature sensitive plants inside or
cover them now.

After tonight, temperatures are expected to remain above
freezing in most locations through the coming week.
