Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 101 PM AKDT Mon Apr 17 2017 .DISCUSSION... Models in good agreement with a 557 dam high pressure aloft over the Arctic that will continue to dominate the weather across northern Alaska through friday. A weak 536 dam low will develop over nunivak island late tonight and remain quasi stationary through wednesday. Northerly flow over the interior will keep cooler temps for much of the northern and central interior through mid week. The 557 dam high will slowly weaken through the week. Arctic slope...Visibilities have improved in some areas of the north slope but still some local low visibility issue through this afternoon around deadhorse. Winds still blowing from the east around 20 to 25 kts this afternoon from deadhorse east. Winds will slowly decrease this evening and visibilities will continue to improve. West coast...Weak frontal boundary bringing scattered rain and snow showers from nome south through tuesday before clearing out tuesday afternoon. Pressure gradient over the northern interior remains strong through wednesday. Northeast winds 15 to 30 mph over higher terrain will continue through mid week. The arctic boundary south of the Middle Tanana Valley will remain over the area through about early Tuesday before it begins to move back north. Then another reinforcement of cold air slides down to push the arctic air back over the same place again by Wednesday. The cold air should remain for the most part through the remainder of the week.
