Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Aloft...
A ridge over northern Alaska will weaken slowly through Wed then
rebuild late next week. This will keep most of northern Alaska dry
through the weekend and into next week, except the West Coast and
Arctic Coast of Alaska which could see light precip Sun into next
week. Temperatures will remain near of just above normal this
weekend then cool to near normal next week.

Surface...
A 1039 mb high over the Beaufort Sea will weaken through Sun. This
is causing east winds 10 mph over the Arctic Coast of Alaska. Will
see areas of steam fog between midnight and noon along the Arctic
coast through tonight with this.

An Arctic Front stretching from Chicken to the Bering Strait will
drift north to Eagle to Shishmaref by 4pm Sat...and then remain
quasi-stationary into Mon. Will see temperatures warm to above
normal south of the front.

A low pressure trough over Norton Sound will move west today.
There are mid level clouds and a few flurries with this.

A weather front along the Alaska Peninsula will move to the
central Bering Sea tonight and then continue west. More flurries
with this .

A third front will move from th Gulf of Alaska to St Matthew
Island to King Salmon by 4pm Sun...and then to Gambell to King
Salmon by 4pm Mon. This will bring a chance of rain and snow
to Southwest Alaska Sun night and Mon with the best chance of rain
over zones 214 and 215.

A low pressure trough from Wrangel Island north will move to
Barrow to Cape Lisburne Sun and to Barter Island to Cape Lisburne
Mon. Expect flurries and patchy fog with this feature.

High pressure building over the Chukchi Sea behind this trough
will cause northeast winds to increase along the West Coast Sun
and Mon.

.DISCUSSION...
Models initialize well except that the high aloft north of Barrow
is stronger than was initialized. Expect this to result in the
ridge breaking down slower than models indicate. Will use GFS for
most fields excepting the precipitation field which again show
precip over Interior Alaska this weekend which will not occur.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Very dry and sunny conditions will continue over Interior Alaska
through Mon.
