Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 337 PM AKST Wed Nov 15 2017 .DISCUSSION... Active Weather over Northern Alaska. A strong front extends south along the west coast from a 994 mb low near Wrangel Island. Moisture ahead of the front continues to move east into the western interior early this evening and into the central interior later this evening and tonight. Southwest flow from the surface to the mid levels of the atmosphere ahead of the front continue to produce heavy snow in the western Brooks Range and Seward Peninsula where Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect into tonight. Freezing rain is expected to move inland as temperatures aloft rise to around zero to 4 below over the YK Delta and locations south of Unalakleet. Up to one tenth of an inch of ice accumulation is expected in these areas and 4 to 7 inches of snow is expected in the Nulato Hills. Winter Weather Advisories have been extended in these areas through Thursday evening. Winter Weather Advisories have also been issued over the central and eastern interior as well as the southeastern Brooks Range where 4 to 7 inches of snow is expected to fall beginning tonight and continuing into Friday. Strong northwest flow behind the front will enhance the up slope flow in the Alaska Range where up to a foot of snow is expected, especially to the west of the Parks Highway. As the surface low near Wrangel Island moves south and east over the North Slope tonight and Thursday heavy snow and blowing snow will continue over the north slope. West and northwest winds will enhance snowfall along the northern slopes of the Brooks Range. Strong northwest winds develop tomorrow over St Lawrence Island with wind gusts to 65 mph expected to develop Thursday afternoon and will continue into Thursday evening. Strong west to northwest winds will also develop over the southern portion of Norton Sound as well as the lower YK Delta where a long fetch and sustained winds will produce high surf in eastern Norton Sound as well as the lower YK Delta coast into Friday. The 12z model suite initialized well against the 12z surface analysis and verified well against the 18z surface analysis. Model spread continues to be minimal in the short range and but increases substantially in the mid range with significant positional differences on a low moving southeast through the eastern Bering Sea Sunday.
