Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
The 12z model suite initialized well against the 12 surface
analysis and verified well against the 18z surface analysis. Model
spread remains reasonable through late next week on the location
and strength of large scale features.

A building ridge aloft currently located over Fairbanks will
migrate slowly west over the week and will bring well above
normal temperatures, low relative humidities and increasing fire
weather concerns over much of northern and particularly the
interior this week. Expect temperatures over the interior to
increase into the middle and upper 70s by mid week and some
warmer locations will push into the lower 80s by the end of the
week. The warm temperatures will combine with minimum relative
humidities in the 20s and 30s in the afternoon and evenings to
meet two of the three Red Flag criteria of large portions of the
interior next week. Winds, the third meteorological Red Flag
criteria, over the interior will likely meet Red Flag criteria at
some locations at times next week. The winds will be be
influenced by the strength and position of the thermal trough.
Will need to monitory closely. The chance of thunderstorms will
increase later in the week especially over the eastern and central
interior and will add additional concerns for fire weather this
up coming week.

The warm temperatures and high freezing levels will also increase
runoff from glaciers and high mountain snow over the Alaska Range
next week and will likely produce rises on streams and small
rivers fed by glaciers and snowmelt. The freezing levels will
also increase over the Brooks Range and north slope which will
increase snowmelt runoff over the North Slope. The increased
runoff will likely produce some increases in river levels on the
north slope as breakup continues. Will need to monitor for ice
jams with increased snowmelt runoff on the north slope rivers this
week.

A surface high pressure system north of the north slope continues
to bring east and northeast winds especially along the coast.
Periodic low ceilings, fog and flurries will continue on the
north slope especially along the coast into this next week.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.FIRE WEATHER...
The ridge aloft will persist over most of the interior producing
partly cloudy skies, warm temperatures and low relative humidities
through out this week. The exception will be the southeast
interior where a decaying weather front remains in the area and is
producing mostly cloudy conditions with scattered showers and a
chance of thunderstorms today and Monday. Near Red Flag
conditions are expected over much of the interior especially in
the afternoon and evenings over a large portion of the interior
this upcoming week. As temperatures continue to rise over the
interior the Red Flag criteria for temperatures will be met at
more and more locations especially by the middle of the week and
beyond as temperatures rise into the upper 70s and even low 80s.
As it warms and continues to dry out over the interior the Red
Flag criteria for minimum relative humidities will also be met at
more and more locations. The exact location and strength of the
thermal trough will impact the winds over the interior and will be
one of the key factors determining if the third Red Flag
criteria, for wind will be met. At this point it looks likely that
this criteria will be met at some point at various locations and
times next week. The potential for thunderstorms will also
increase later in the week which will only add to fire weather
concerns. Will need to closely monitor through the week.

.HYDROLOGY...
Breakup continues over the north slope with only minimal ice jams
and minor rises on rivers noted at this time. Freezing levels
continue to rise over the state and will increase snow melt runoff
over the the north slope and will likely cause glacial and
snowmelt runoff to increase in small streams in the Alaska Range
this week, especially by later in the week.
