Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
Seasonal summer time pattern to continue over northern Alaska. An
upper level ridge currently centered over Beaver Creek in the
Yukon will continue to drift slowly to the east and northeast
today and Saturday as a long wave trough over the Bering Strait
slowly digs south and east into the western interior and western
north slope today and into the central interior and central north
slope Saturday.

A weak thermal trough along a Arctic Village to McGrath line will
continue to weaken as surface high pressure builds north and east
into the western and central interior. Moisture rotating around a
1010 mb low in the Gulf of Alaska will bring an increase in
moisture in the low and mid levels of the atmosphere over the
southern interior and will increase instability over the southeast
interior today and saturday. Scattered rain showers and isolated
thunderstorms are expected along and south and east of a line from
Anvik to Manely Hot Springs to Fairbanks to just north of Eagle.

Expect mostly dry conditions with partly cloudy skies north and
west of this line over the northeast, central and western
interior. A weak front along the west coast will produce scattered
showers west of White Mountain as well as areas of fog and low
ceilings.

Southwest winds along the western north slope will continue and
increase to the 20 to 35 range this afternoon, tonight and
saturday as the pressure gradient between the building surface
high over the southwest interior and a low pressure trough over
the Chukchi Sea builds. Expect moderate surf with 1 to 2 feet
above normal tides along the western north slope today through
Saturday.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Relative Humidity value are expected to remain above 25 percent
in the Central and Eastern interior, except for the Yukon Flats to
the northeast Brooks Range where they will dip into the low 20s.
In the Western Interior and West Coast values will generally be in
the 30s and 40s. A weak pressure gradient over the Interior
through Sunday will keep sustained winds below Red Flag criteria
across the forecast area.

...Strong Winds and elevated Surf Saturday...

Elevated surf is expected to develop tonight along the Chukchi
Sea Coast and will continue into Sunday morning. Strong
southwesterly winds will develop tonight continuing into early
Sunday morning. The strongest winds are expected to remain
offshore; however, gusts of 45 mph are possible on Saturday along
the coast. The strong winds may cause previously shorefast ice to
break off causing the ice to quickly move to the northeast. At
this point the ice movement does not look to cause any issues to
land. Individuals with interests along the coast should prepare
for the potentially elevated surf conditions this weekend. Boaters
in the area should be aware of hazardous boating conditions.

southwesterly winds will develop tonight continuing into early
Sunday morning. The strongest winds are expected to remain
offshore; however, gusts of 35 mph are possible on Saturday near
Point Hope. Individuals with interests along the coast should
prepare for the potentially elevated surf conditions this weekend.
Boaters in the area should be aware of hazardous boating conditions.
