...HIGH WIND WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 10 PM THIS EVENING TO 10 PM
AKDT WEDNESDAY...

The National Weather Service in Fairbanks has issued a High Wind
Warning, which is in effect from 10 PM this evening to 10 PM AKDT
Wednesday. The High Wind Watch is no longer in effect. 

* LOCATION...Alaska Range Passes.

* WINDS...South winds 35 to 45 mph with gusts to 75 mph.

* TIMING...Winds will begin to increase late Tuesday evening and 
  will peak during the day on Wednesday. Winds will start to drop 
  Wednesday evening. 

* IMPACTS...Strong winds will make travel difficult. Loose 
  objects will be blown around. 

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A High Wind Warning means hazardous high winds are occurring or
expected. Take precautions to protect life and prevent property
damage.

Advisory, which is in effect from 10 PM this evening to 10 PM
AKDT Wednesday. 

* LOCATION...South of Birch Lake

* WINDS...South winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 60 mph.

* TIMING...Winds will begin to increase late Tuesday evening and 
  will peak during the day on Wednesday. Winds will start to drop 
  early Wednesday evening.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Wind Advisory means that strong winds are occurring or
expected. Travel may be difficult. Secure loose objects which may
be blown about by the wind.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
The 00z model suite initialized well against the 00z surface
analysis and verified well against the 06z surface analysis. Model
spread remains very reasonable in the short range but increases
rapidly in the mid range as well as the long range periods.

Aloft at 500 hpa, weak ridging remains over eastern Alaska and a
525 dm low located 200 nm south of Dutch Harbor anchors a long
wave trough extending from near the pole southward through the
bering strait and over Bristol Bay and into the northern Pacific.
An upper level low associated with the remnants of Sanvu
currently just east of Kamchatka will move east along the Aleutian
chain and will reestablish the long wave trough over central
Alaska. The upper level low currently 200 nm south of Dutch
Harbor moves northeast into the northern Gulf of Alaska along the
back side of an upper level ridge over the Yukon and British
Columbia Tuesday night and Wednesday. This produces a very tight
gradient aloft and will produce strong winds along the northern
slopes of the Alaska Range as a strong mountain wave develops
Tuesday night and Wednesday.

Abundant moisture moves northward Tuesday night and Wednesday as
the front moves over the Alaska Range and southern interior with a
strong push from the southeast. Expect some of that moisture to
make it into the interior despite rapidly developing and strong
mountain wave with drying chinook winds over the southern portions
of the central and eastern interior and along the eastern and
central Alaska Range Tuesday night and Wednesday. Expect gusty
east winds to also develop over interior especially over highway
summits Tuesday afternoon and continuing into Wednesday. Storm
total precipitation of between one quarter and one half inch is
expected Tuesday and Wednesday over the eastern and central
interior and between one half and one inch of precipitation is
expected over the western interior and Brooks Range. Snow levels
are expected to remain above 5000 feet in the Brooks Range with
the low latitude origins of this moist airmass so heavy snow is
only expected above pass level in the Brooks Range.

A strong mountain wave develops over the eastern and central
Alaska Range Tuesday evening and Wednesday and at this time models
continue to indicate the potential for Warning Level wind gusts
of 70 mph or greater to develop along and near the northern
foothills of the central and eastern Alaska Range beginning
Tuesday evening and continuing into Wednesday. The strong mountain
wave will channel strong winds aloft toward the surface and will
likely extend some distance from the Alaska Range to locations
such as Delta Junction and Healy. Continue to monitor.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
