Aloft...The 12Z analysis shows amplified omega blocking pattern gradually breaking down as shortwave trough rounds the backside of the mainland Alaska ridge, with the wave/530 dm low currently moving onshore over far northwest Canada. Broad troughing remains over the western Bering Sea with a 501 dm low centered over the Kamchatka Peninsula. Broad low pressure remains over the eastern third of the Gulf of Alaska and north Pacific with a complex of 3 individual smaller upper lows rotating around a center around 53N 139W. Surface...The 18Z analysis shows strong 1048 mb low located around 79.8N, 141.1W. A weakening 999 mb low was seen over the east Siberian Sea continues to drag a weakening weather front stretchingalong the Siberian Arctic Coast southeastward through the Chukchi Sea. Low pressure around 980 mb over the Kamchatka Peninsula has an occluded front extending initially north then southeast through the western Bering Sea running through the western Aleutian Islands. Broad/weak low pressure remains over the eastern Gulf. Models remain in fair to good agreement for the first 100 hours or so, and are coming into better agreement for the weather situation early next week. High pressure will become cutoff over the central Beaufort Sea as shortwave trough sweeps southward down the backside of upper ridge through Alberta and eastern Alaska. The upper level high will then remain nearly stationary in the Beaufort Sea through this weekend, before the high expands south through the Chukchi Sea to merge with short wave ridging building north through the Bering Sea. At the surface, 1048 mb surface high over the eastern Beaufort Sea will remain nearly stationary and will slowly drift toward the eastern Arctic Coast. The 980 mb low over the southern tip of the Kamchatka Peninsula will drift into the far western Bering and gradually weaken through the weekend as it retreats back into eastern Siberia. The associated weather front will try to progress eastward into the central Bering before stalling and weakening as arctic high in the Beaufort expands south. North Slope: Winter Weather Advisories for blowing snow remain in effect from Barrow east, as winds are expected to continue to increase this evening as arctic high drifts toward the coast. Moved up the timing on the start time for zone 202 based on trends through this afternoon, with visibility already dropping to around 1 mile late this morning. Conditions are expected to persist through Saturday night, before winds and pressure gradient weakens slightly due to weakening Kamchatka low. Elsewhere, fair weather is expected with gusty south winds through eastern Brooks Range passes. West Coast and West Interior: Fair weather is expected with building high pressure. Weakening occluded front will bring scattered snow showers or flurries to St. Lawrence Island, mainly tonight, before the front weakens and retrogrades back westward. Southeast winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected tonight into early Saturday for the island with the approach of the weakening front. Winds will also increase over the Kobuk Valley and Kotzebue sound area Saturday night into Sunday, where a wind advisory may be needed for zone 217 during this time frame for winds gusting AOA 40 mph. A slight cool down is expected for the western Interior as heights aloft fall with retreating upper high in the Beaufort Sea and a colder air mass moving west from the Yukon. Central/East Interior: No major concerns for the region. High pressure will bring continued quiet weather this weekend into early next week. Upper level disturbance and weak cold front will drop south out of northwest Canada tonight, which will bring a bit more clouds and perhaps some flurries Saturday and Sunday, with the best chance for the upper Tanana Valley and eastern Alaska Range. Temperatures will cool slightly with the passage of this front, with highs back in the 30s to around 40 by Sunday. Pressure gradient over the interior looks to increase again tonight into Saturday as high pressure shifts south from Banks Island in the eastern Beaufort Sea. This will result in increased winds over the Dalton and Elliot Highway Summits in zones 219, 220 and 221.
