Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
Models in decent agreement through 60 hours for synoptic features.
Mostly the surface features are relatively close except for the
precip field.

Upper level ridge firmly over Northern Alaska from ridge
originating in Mexico. A high aloft center located about 300 NM
north of the Prudhoe Bay. Upper low in the north Pacific Ocean
with a more of an east west trough running from the upper low
westward to a complex Long wave trough and upper ow center west of
Kamchatka Peninsula.

As the surface high which is about 200 NM west of Prince Patrick
Island remains nearly stationary and just floats around fr the
next few days and the surface low in the north Pacific slowly
fills near Kodiak Island through Friday, the gradient will remain
fairly constant and tight over the eastern Arctic Coast through
Friday.

A strong gradient over the central portion of the Interior has
warranted Wind Advisories to be issued for higher terrain in
portions of the Northern Interior. Some blowing snow will
accompany the winds but the temperatures are pretty warm so
blowing snow will be limited. Wind will continue through at least
Wednesday afternoon.

Winds through the Alaska Range will increase some late tonight and
on Tuesday but gap flow winds will not be oriented the correct
direction for real strong wind flow through the passes.
