.SYNOPSIS FOR NORTHWEST COAST...
A 989 mb low over southwestern Alaska will track northwest and 
weaken over the Bering Strait by Tuesday afternoon. A 977 mb North
Pacific low will cross near Cold Bay Tuesday, reaching Bristol 
Bay as a 989 mb low before tracking north of St Lawrence Island 
Wednesday morning. A third low will develop over southwest Alaska
and reach the Bering strait Thursday as a 985 mb low.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
An active southerly flow pattern continues for the eastern portion
of the forecast area into next week. A series of fronts will move
northward through the Interior through Tuesday each one bringing
a round of precipitation. The first of these fronts will reach
the Alaska this afternoon, will begin to push through the Interior
this evening and will reach the Beaufort Sea Coast early Friday.
The models are in good agreement with the overall pattern;
however, there are significant difference in QPF values even in
the very short term.

Central and Eastern Interior: A weather front will reach the
Alaska range this afternoon. This front will bring heavy snowfall
to the eastern Alaska Range with lesser amounts to the west. The
overall snowfall for this event looks to be lower than models were
suggesting previously. Thus, I downgraded the Winter Storm
Warning for zone 226 to a Winter Weather Advisory and I opted to
remove the advisory that was out for 225. In both cases the lower
snowfall amounts fell below criteria for keeping the status quo.
downsloping will limit the precipitation from just north of the
Alaska Range north to Fairbanks and even in zones 225 and 226
there will be a tight gradient in storm total snowfall amounts.
Precipitation in Fairbanks this evening is probably the biggest
forecast challenge with this shift. The southerly flow should
limit precipitation over Fairbanks this evening. In spite of
this, models are showing QPF over Fairbanks with the NAM showing
more than the GFS or the ECMWF. Warmer air aloft over Fairbanks
this evening may result in any precipitation falling as freezing
rain at times. Current thinking is that drying will limit the
precipitation to actually reach the ground, so will limit any
mention of freezing rain to chance wording. This situation will
need to be monitored this evening. We expect snow to pick back up
as the front moves north of Fairbanks. The Winter weather
advisories that were hoisted for tonight into tomorrow by the
previous shift for zones 218, 219 and 220 look to be in overall
good shape; however, I did make a few timing adjustments. Gusty
easterly winds associated with the Tanana Valley Jet are expected
this evening in the Delta Junction area. Wind gusts in the Delta
Junction area will be around 45 mph with this system. Gusty winds are
also expected in the higher terrain north of Fairbanks this
evening. The next round of precipitation is expected on Sunday,
with another round on Monday (the stronger looking of the two
right now). In both cases there is disagreement in the models in
the exact timing of the events as well as the placement of the
heaviest precipitation.

North slope and Brooks Range: Fog and flurries will persist along
the Arctic Coast this evening. A weather front will spread snow
over the north slopes of the Brooks Range and the Beaufort Sea
Coast tomorrow. Snowfall totals north of the Brooks Range will
generally range from 2 to 4 inches with the heaviest amounts along
the Beaufort Sea coast. Winds along the Beaufort Sea Coast will
pick up late tonight with gusts of 45 to 50 mph expected tomorrow.
When combined with falling snow these winds will cause blizzard
conditions to develop. I have issued Blizzard Warnings for zones
203 and 204 for late tonight and tomorrow. Another round of snow
is expected Sunday night with a heavier round expected Monday
night.

West Coast and Western Interior: Some light snow moving westward
across the Yukon Delta and lower Yukon Valley this evening. A
weather front will bring up to 4 inches of snowfall to the western
Interior as it move across this evening. Some gusty winds will
develop tonight north of the Bering Strait; however, the strongest
winds will remain offshore.
