Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion...CORRECTED

.DISCUSSION...

Models are in decent agreement in the short term with a building
ridge over the mainland and a weather front moving into the
Bering strait and west coast today into Wednesday.
Ridge axis will shift to the east over the Alcan border Thursday
morning and and upper 518 dam low will move across northwest
Alaska and move inland across the interior Thursday afternoon
into Friday. This low will bring another round of snow for
the Interior.

A weather front associated with a strong low over eastern Russia
will push into the Bering Sea today and into the west coast of
Alaska tonight. A 1001 mb low will move over the Chukotsk
Peninsula on Wednesday and into the Seward Peninsula Wednesday
night.

Central and Eastern Interior: A decreasing trend in temperatures
is expected for Tuesday into Wednesday as cloud cover decreases.
Other than the cooler temperatures expect relatively quiet
conditions for Tuesday and Wednesday. The upper level low will
move across the Interior on Thursday which could drop another 4 to
7 inches of snow across the area. Fairbanks could see 5 inches of
snow from Thursday morning through Friday morning. The Alaska
Range could see higher amounts of snow Thursday into Friday.

North Slope and Brooks Range: Winds will shift to become more
southerly today and more easterly on Wednesday in response to a
low moving northward over eastern Russia. A weather system will
bring snowfall Tuesday night into Wednesday along the Chukchi Sea
coast and Western Brooks Range.

West Coast and Western Interior: Southeasterly winds will increase
over St. Lawrence Island today through Wednesday morning. A high
wind warning has been issued for the Bering strait for southerly
gusts around 65 mph. Strongest gusts this afternoon through
this evening. Precipitation will move over St. Lawrence Island on
Tuesday and into the west coast on Wednesday. Rain snow mix
for Saint Lawrence island and mainly snow from nome north. Winter
storm warnings have been issued for zones 207 208 and 209 on
Wednesday for snow amounts of 4 to 8 inches. Blowing snow
with low visibility less than one mile at times will also develop
as well. Snow will begin to taper off Thursday morning along the
coast.
