Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
Aloft...amplified pattern continues with blocking high centered
over mainland Alaska. A shortwave trough was seen rounding the
crest of this ridge over the northern Beaufort Sea. To the west,
long wave troughing was seen over eastern Siberia with a 487 dm
low centered near the Kamchatka Peninsula. A 531 dm low off the
Washington coast completes the omega blocking pattern over the
north Pacific region.

Surface...Very broad area of high pressure was seen over the
Beaufort Sea and extending south into mainland AK, with a 1040 mb
high center near Banks Island. A 959 mb low was seen over eastern
Siberia with a weakening occluded front extending initially
northeast from this low out over the Bering Sea then extending
south through the central Bering Sea. A 1000 mb low remained
stacked beneath 531 dm upper low around 345 miles west of the
northwest Washington coast.

Models remain in fair to good agreement for the first 100 hours
or so, although remains some notable run to run variability on
the main deterministic guidance; low to moderate confidence
continues beyond the Monday time frame. The longwave pattern is
expected to remain unchanged through Saturday with ridging
expected to remain over the west Interior through Friday, before a
short wave rounding the crest of the ridge cuts ridge in two by
late Saturday resulting in a cutoff high building in over the
central Beaufort Sea. Long wave troughing will remain over the
western Bering Sea. At the surface, surface high over the eastern
Beaufort Sea will remain nearly stationary and will gradually
strengthen to 1045 to 1048 mb by late Friday, before slowly
drifting toward the eastern Arctic Coast. The 959 mb low over the
southern tip of the Kamchatka Peninsula will drift into the
western Bering and gradually weakens through the weekend.

North Slope: High over the eastern Beaufort will keep the North
Slope quiet for the remainder of the week into this weekend, with
periods of low stratus/flurries and fog to affect the coastal
communities, mainly from Barrow east. Winds continue to increase
tonight as pressure gradient tightens in response to the high
center shifting south, reaching to marginal gales by Saturday.

West Coast and West Interior: Weakening occluded front will
continue to brush ENE across the west coast tonight bringing a
brief shot of snow, mixed with rain at times, to the Bering Strait
and Chukchi Sea coast mainly this evening. This will gradually
diminish late tonight into Friday morning. Winds along the Bering
Strait Coast are also expected to weaken with the passage of the
weakening front. A secondary low moving from the Kamchatka
Peninsula and associated occluded front will bring another chance
of mixed rain and snow to St Lawrence Island Saturday. This second
front is expected to stall and also weaken over the Bering Sea as
high pressure further dominates mainland Alaska, which will bring
fair weather to the west Interior into this weekend.

Central/East Interior: No concerns for the region. High pressure
will bring continued quiet weather to the region into this
weekend. Upper level disturbance rounds the backside of the ridge
which will bring a bit more clouds and perhaps some flurries
Friday into Saturday. Gusty winds over the interior will continue
through this afternoon into this evening before pressure gradient
weakens overnight. Pressure gradient over the interior looks to
also increase again tomorrow night into Saturday as high pressure
shifts south from Banks Island in the eastern Beaufort Sea. This
will result in increased winds over the Dalton and Elliot Highway
Summits in zones 219, 220 and 221.

...Poor Visibility in Blowing Snow Beginning Friday Night...

Strong high pressure will approach the eastern Arctic Coast on
Friday. As the high approaches, strong east winds of 30 to 40 mph
to develop from Friday evening to Saturday night from Barrow
east. Winds may gust over 50 mph from Prudhoe Bay east. The
strengthening winds will cause blowing snow to develop during this
time, which will reduce visibility as low as one half mile at
times. Conditions will gradually improve from west to east on
Sunday as winds subside.
