Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...

Current winter weather hazards for the West Coast and the Western
Interior will be the main forecast concern. Will have to evaluate
the potential for winter related hazards over the eastern Brooks
Range and elevated terrain in zone 219. The 00Z/30 deterministic
models show similar solutions through the middle of the week, with
model solutions diverging in regards the features around the
strong, blocking upper level ridge over Alaska. In regards to the
ridge of high pressure over Alaska, there strong agreement
between the model solutions, keeping it over Alaska through the
week.

Aloft...A strong shortwave associated with an upper level trough
over the Bering Sea will rotate northeast and over the West Coast
today and then over the Western Interior Tuesday, reaching the
Arctic Coast late Tuesday evening. A piece of energy at the
southern extent of the trough will break off, forming a new upper
low Tuesday morning, and then track east over the Aleutian
Peninsula and Kodiak Island Tuesday night. The upper low
eventually gets squeezed south as a ridge of high pressure builds
north out of the Northern Pacific Wednesday. This ridge will
continue to build over mainland Alaska and become 569 dam centered
over Western Alaska, then will persist through Saturday. H850
temperatures will begin to rise over the forecast area, with a
significant warming trend towards 0C across Western Alaska by
Thursday. Cold H850 temperatures will be deflected to the east,
remaining over western Canada through next weekend.

Surface...A 977 mb low west of Saint Matthew Island will move
north along 174 W over the Chukotsk Peninsula as a 988 mb low late
Monday night, then move over the Chukchi Sea by Tuesday morning. A
trough associated with this low will develop along the Arctic
Coast Tuesday. By late Tuesday/early Wednesday, a broad area of
low pressure will reside over the Arctic Ocean extending south
over the Arctic Coast. An associated weather front now over the
Southwest Mainland will push inland to the Western Interior, then
move north. A 1040 mb ridge of high pressure over the Gulf of
Alaska extends north and over the eastern two thirds of Alaska,
but will recede back south today as the low in the Bering Sea
pushes north. Leeside troughing will develop north of the Alaska
Range today, then persist through Tuesday before diminishing.
Strong southerly flow over the West Coast and Western Interior
will persist overnight tonight, then the strongest gradient shifts
along the Brooks Range Tuesday. Ridge of high pressure over the
Northern Pacific and Gulf of Alaska will push north and over
Mainland Alaska Wednesday, becoming a 1048 mb surface high by
Thursday afternoon.

Western Interior and West Coast...Active and unsettled pattern to
continue through Tuesday before transitioning to a more benign
weather pattern as a ridge of high pressure builds overhead.
Currently, snow has spread inland over the West Coast and Western
Interior and appears to be progressing more quickly than
previously advertised as well as bringing an end to the snow and
winds quicker for the Norton Sound area. Have made adjustments to
both the both start and end times for warnings and advisories.
Also, for the Yukon Delta, Saint Lawrence Island, Bering Strait,
and the Norton Sound Coast, some consideration to the possibility
of freezing rain and possibility to a change over to rain was
given. Given the atmosphere profile over Saint Lawrence Island and
the Yukon Delta...it is very likely that snow will mix in with
freezing rain later this morning as temperatures in the lower
levels continue to warm. Have included the mention of freezing
rain in the current winter weather hazards. Further north over
the Seward Peninsula and inland over the lower Yukon Valley, there
is a chance of freezing rain. Still expecting for up to a foot of
snow over the Brooks Range and less amounts of up to 9 inches
over the Nulato Hills. Strong winds will continue with poor
visibility continuing for Bering Strait and Seward Peninsula and
north. As temperatures warm this morning over the Yukon Delta,
blowing snow will become less of a concern, especially closer to
the coast. More benign weather expected later this week when a
ridge of high pressure builds over the area.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...Strong winds through Brooks Range
passes are expected to develop from west to east through the
afternoon. Have issued a winter weather advisory for blowing snow
through the eastern Brooks Range as winds gusting to 50 mph are
expected to develop later this and a strong wind headline for the
northwestern Brooks Range. Elsewhere, isolated snow showers and
flurries expected over the western Arctic Coast through tomorrow
as the low in the Bering Sea lifts north. Offshore flow will
continue late Tuesday and will become westerly. Gale force west
winds are advertised to develop over the eastern Beaufort Sea
Coast Wednesday into Thursday. Will have to monitor to see if any
winter related hazards for blowing snow will be needed.

Central and Eastern Interior...Gust winds will are expected to
develop over summits in zone 219 this afternoon and continue
into late tomorrow afternoon. Blowing snow and heavy drifting snow
will be the main hazard associated with these gusty winds and thus
have issued a winter weather advisory. To the south, a leeside
trough will develop today north of the Alaska Range and with it
gap winds through Alaska Range passes along the Parks and
Richardson highways. Should see these gap winds ramp up this
afternoon and persist through tomorrow afternoon. Once the upper
level ridge finally takes hold over mainland Alaska, weather will
quickly become quite and temperatures will cool to seasonal norms.
