Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 228 PM AKST Wed Mar 8 2017 .DISCUSSION... Models in decent agreement through 60 hours. Upper level ridge continues to build in over the West Coast and the Bering Sea through Thursday. A vertically stacked low just west of the Kamchatka Peninsula will move northeast around the ridge and combine with another upper low moving eastward in the Russian Arctic by Saturday. This will squash the ridge down and develop a long wave trough over the Eastern half of Alaska by late Sunday and into Monday. Surface high pressure over northern Alaska continues will persist through the weekend although it will gradually weaken over time. The low moving out of Eastern Russia will continue to tighten the pressure gradient along the northwest Arctic Coast which will keep the area from about Point Lay westward very windy, hence the High Wind Warning. The upper level trough with the associated warm front will push an area of light snow into Northern Alaska from the Brooks Range north and east of Point Lay beginning Thursday afternoon. Conditions will likely deteriorate in the western Arctic and spread eastward through Thursday night.
