A 997 mb low 475 nm south of Cape Suckling will weaken and move
southeast today. A front will enter the western Gulf this evening 
and move east across the Gulf through Sat. Another front will enter 
the southwestern Gulf Sat night ahead of a strong North Pacific low.

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
A longwave trough extending over western mainland Alaska through
Bristol Bay and into the Pacific remains the dominant upper level
feature on the weather map this morning. This trough is anchored
by a broad surface low which has crossed the Alaska Peninsula and
is now entering the western Gulf approximately 150 miles south of
Kodiak Island. The air mass ahead of this feature remains very
convectively unstable as evidenced by IR/WV satellite imagery,
yielding widespread rain and snow showers along the Gulf coast as
numerous embedded waves rotate northward through the Gulf. Shower
activity remains more isolated and intermittent further inland as
stronger cross barrier flow is reestablished over the coastal
mountain ranges. Elsewhere, another gale force front is moving
through the Western Aleutians as a deep low parallels the
Kamchatka coast.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Despite continued difficulty in resolving some of the various
small scale features moving through the Gulf, models remain in
strong synoptic agreement through Friday evening. The low south of
Kodiak will continue to weaken as it moves eastward out of the
area through Friday morning, followed closely by a transient ridge
moving west to east across the Bering and mainland Alaska. This
will allow the front over the western Bering to quickly track
eastward and reach the southwest coast by Friday. Models then
begin to diverge by Saturday morning as another shortwave trough
moves along the Aleutian chain and then into the western Gulf.
Given the good overall agreement, mainly used the NAM in the short
term before incorporating some GFS Saturday into Saturday night as
spread increases.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions and light north winds will persist through
late Thursday evening. Patchy fog may develop near the terminal
after midnight as winds subside and ridging begins to build in
from the west.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
The main low in the region is located south of Kodiak Island and
is moving to the southeast. A series of upper level disturbances
are moving through the Gulf and into Southcentral Alaska today.
Most of the precipitation will be relegated to the coast and
coastal mountains with just some isolated snow showers making it
inland. The areas near the Gulf coast will likely see a mix of
rain and snow as temperatures are hovering around the lower to mid
30s.

As the low moves south of the Gulf it will allow the pressure
gradient to relax more than it has in a number of days over the
area resulting in winds diminishing. Friday will be the notable
break between systems for most of the area. The next front will
move into the western Gulf and Kodiak Island area Friday night and
bring rain to Kodiak and another rain and snow mix to the north
Gulf coast by Saturday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
The low pressure system previously over the Alaska Peninsula has
tracked into the north Pacific earlier this morning, and continues
to slowly track to the southeast. A weak upper level wave along
the northern periphery of this system will continue to bring some
rain and snow showers through this afternoon mainly along the
Alaska and Aleutian ranges in the Bristol Bay area. Short wave
ridging begins to push across the region this afternoon ahead of
the next front. A North pacific low moves across the Bering and
pushes a front to the southwest coast and Alaska Peninsula early
Friday morning. Temperatures are initially cold enough to support
snow along the coast Thursday night into early Friday morning,
then precipitation changes over to rain as southerly flow pushes a
warmer air mass inland Friday morning. Whereas, inland areas
should remain cold enough to support snow through the end of the
week and into the weekend. Kept snow amounts conservative through
Friday evening as the boundary just begins to make inland progress
Friday night.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...
An unsettled weather pattern continues through Saturday as the
low south of the Alaska Peninsula continues to track southeast
into the North Pacific, and the next front associated with a low
just east of the Kamchatka Peninsula starts to sweep across the
central and eastern Aleutians through Friday. This system will
bring another round of gusty winds and precipitation back to the
area, spreading from west to east as we head toward the weekend.
It is worth noting that the warmer southerly flow ahead of the
system will keep precipitation along the front primarily rain,
with a mix of snow and rain along the trailing edge of the system
as colder air wraps around the occluded system.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Saturday through Wednesday)...
The beginning of the weekend will feature a large low in the
northern Bering Sea with a long front moving through Southwest and
then Southcentral Alaska. The front will occlude shortly after
landfall over southwest Alaska, which will decrease the transport
of warm air into the interior areas of the state. Thus, at this
point we expect most precip that falls over the Lower Kuskokwim
Valley and also across the interior areas of Southcentral will
fall primarily as snow. However, there has also been a trend among
the models toward developing a triple-point low off the coast of
the Kenai Peninsula on Saturday morning. This is a climatologically
favored spot for triple-point low development in a weather
pattern like this, and would result in stronger cross-barrier
flow and likely significant downsloping across many of the
population centers from Kenai to Anchorage and Palmer.

Heading into next week, another trend in the models has been
toward a stronger ridge in the northeast Pacific/eastern Gulf of
Alaska. While the details of individual storms is still very
uncertain, what we are starting to be able to say with some
confidence is that southern Alaska is heading into a much warmer,
windier (onshore winds), and potentially wetter (rain possibly
even into the interior areas) for much of next week. Stay tuned
