Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
A strong upper level ridge centered near Nome is building eastward
into Alaska. The flow at the surface is fairly weakly offshore,
with some of the preferred gaps reporting fairly gusty winds. The
air aloft with this ridge is very warm and low level inversions
are already getting fairly strong. There is a front over the
western Aleutians and western Bering Sea associated with an upper
low near the Kamchatka Peninsula. This front is weakening and its
eastward progress is rather slow.

&&

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
The numerical models are in excellent agreement. Exactly how much
fog and stratus will be over the area for the next couple of days
is the main forecast challenge, and the models each handle this a
little differently. Over-all the forecast confidence is higher
than normal.

&&

.AVIATION...
PANC...IFR or LIFR Fog and/or stratus are expected late tonight
and through the morning hours. Exactly how long this will last and
how bad conditions will become is a little unclear.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
The main feature impacting the forecast over the next couple of
days will be a large upper level ridge building in over
Southcentral from the northwest. Strong subsidence aloft will
lead to drying across the region and sunny skies across most of
southcentral. One caveat to this are inland areas along the Cook
Inlet where low level moisture from recent rain fall is trapped
underneath a strong subsidence inversion. This is leading to areas
of dense fog from the Western Kenai north into the Anchorage Bowl and
the Mat-Su. The low sun angle this time of year will inhibit
surface heating which will prevent much of the fog/stratus from
burning off, even in the afternoon hours. The upper level ridge
axis will center itself near southcentral by Thursday as 850 mb
temperatures warm to near 7 degrees C. This will enhance the
inversion aloft meaning fog and low stratus will be an issue along
Cook Inlet for the next couple of days. The building ridge will
also lead to strong off shore flow through tomorrow afternoon.
Gusty gap winds will impact coastal areas along the Prince William
Sound, including Seward, Whittier, Valdez, and the Copper River
Delta, where winds could gust between 30-45 mph tonight through
tomorrow afternoon. Winds will subside by Wednesday night leading
to pleasant late fall weather over much of the region by Thursday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

The main forecast challenge over the next couple of days will be
nocturnal fog development. Yesterday's front has dropped south of
the Alaska Peninsula/southwest Alaska today, with shortwave
ridging building in aloft. Numerical guidance continues to
suggest 850mb temps will warm 3 to 6 degrees over the couple of
days for portions of the region, strengthening the nocturnal
inversion. With much of the area having seen recent rainfall,
look for areas of fog to develop once again, similar to what was
observed this last night/this morning. The previous shift already
had fog in the grids and this looks good. The only real change
was an addition of fog with visibilities at or below one mile
being included near the coast for zones 155 and 161.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...

Look for improving conditions across the region, as an area of
high pressure builds across the region aloft. A weakening cold
front will continue to slowly nudge eastward through the western
Aleutians and adjacent waters. However, the main upper-level
support will move rapidly northeast away from the region,
allowing for the front to wash out in time. Attention then turns
to the afore-mentioned front lifting back north towards the
Aleutians as a warm front. Convergence along this front will allow
for spotty light rain to develop during the day Wednesday. A vort
max crossing the region will increase ascent aloft by late in the
day, allowing for increased rainfall coverage for west central
portions of the Aleutian chain and adjacent waters.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7: Thursday through Monday)...

Northwesterly offshore flow will increase Thursday night over
Southcentral Alaska. As colder air pushes into the Interior and a
trough deepens along the northern Gulf Coast, expect gusty gap
winds to peak Friday morning/afternoon and subside Friday night.
Zonal flow Saturday will quickly amplify as a sharp ridge builds
over the Bering Sea by Saturday night. Downstream of the ridge,
shortwave energy will dig southeastward from northwest Alaska
south to the northern Gulf Coast. A surface cold front co-located
with the upper-wave will push south Saturday night, bringing in a
rush of much colder air to Southcentral. This will kick off a
drying and cooling trend that will last through early next week as
deep northerly flow prevails. A chance for some precipitation over
Southcentral exists with the frontal passage Saturday night,
however moisture will be limited amid the northerly flow, and for
now the setup looks fairly weak.

Further west, a weakening front stretching from the western
Aleutians through the Kuskokwim Coast Thursday will continue to
bring rain showers to the area. A weak surface low will develop
along the front over the central Bering Thursday night and track
northeastward to the Bering Strait by Friday afternoon. This will
bring more precipitation to the northern Kuskokwim Coast Friday
before the region dries out by Saturday. A front over the North
Pacific will push north to the Aleutian Islands Friday evening,
setting up a rainy weekend for the Islands and southern Alaska
Peninsula. The front will fall apart by Sunday evening as a much
stronger front associated with a Kamchatka low approaches from the
west.
