.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
A vertically stacked low is nearly stationary over Bristol Bay.
A short-wave trough extends eastward across the northern Gulf,
with a surface occluded front approaching the north Gulf coast.
Widespread (mostly light) rain is falling across much of Southwest
and Southcentral Alaska. However, flow over Southcentral is
becoming more easterly, leading to a bit of a downslope hole in
the lee of the Kenai and Chugach Mountains from the western Kenai
up to Anchorage and the Matanuska Valley. It isn't strong enough
to completely cut off rain, so periods of very light rain or
sprinkles continue. A barrier jet is developing in the usual
location between Montague Island and Cape Suckling out ahead of
the surface front, resulting in gale force winds.

A weak short-wave and low level cold front is diving southward
across the eastern Bering Sea, on the back side of the Bristol Bay
low. This is leading to gusty winds and showers across the region.
High pressure and benign conditions dominate upstream of this
across the central to to western Bering Sea and Aleutians. A
short-wave trough and surface low pressure system are approaching
the western Aleutians from the southwest.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Numerical guidance is in very good agreement through Friday with
large scale features. Minor differences then develop with low in
the Gulf and low over the southwest Bering Friday night and
Saturday, though the differences have very little impact on the
sensible weather. The primary forecast challenge will be details
of precipitation over Southwest and Southcentral Alaska with weak
upper waves rotating around the low settling in the Gulf. Overall
forecast confidence is above average.

.AVIATION...
PANC...With persistent easterly low level flow VFR conditions will
persist. Weak upper level waves will occasionally bring some
showers over the mountains will lower the ceiling to 5000 ft or
less during the overnight hours. Surface winds will remain light.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
The front that extends across the Cook Inlet to northern gulf
stalls through Friday as the associated low pressure system
slowly moves east over Kodiak Island. Southeasterly flow across
the gulf spreads a continuous stream of moisture northward, with
rain developing across the stalled boundary. Rain is expected to
spread inland, however the coverage will lessen as the activity
gets further away from the main boundary. A stronger shortwave
that moves from the upper low after midnight brings a better focus
for a band of rain to move across Southcentral through the
morning on Friday. Gusty winds taper down later tonight as low
pressure crosses over from Bristol Bay, effectively shoving the
coastal ridge to the east.

The upper low moves along the Southern Gulf on Saturday and then
turns toward the central waters on Sunday. This positioning will
keep the highest precipitation chances along the gulf waters and
surrounding coasts for the weekend with only scattered rain
showers inland. The surface low accompanying the upper low will
broaden and fill during the weekend, and as a result, wind speeds
will generally be under 25 knots across the marines on Saturday.
On saturday night, the next surface low moves along the southern
gulf and takes a northward turn on Sunday. There is still
uncertainty on the track and speed of this surface feature, but it
looks like it could bring a better focus for rain and gusty small
craft winds across the east and northern waters of the gulf.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
The low in Bristol Bay is slow to move eastward but will
eventually move south of Kodiak Island Friday. Rain will persist
over Southwest mainland Alaska tonight and then taper off to some
showers tomorrow as the low pulls away from the area. The
persisting showers are due to the cold upper level low remaining
over the area even as the surface low departs. Showers should
become less widespread as we enter the weekend.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...
The northwest flow over the central Bering Sea is breaking out
some of the fog and cold air aloft is kicking off a few showers.
As the ridge of high pressure moves eastward and slackens the
pressure gradient more fog will develop under the ridge.
The next front will drive into the the Western Aleutians and southwest
Bering Sea tomorrow afternoon bringing some Gale force winds to
the marine areas.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...
Thinking is largely unchanged in the long term portion of the
forecast, with a wet and active pattern persisting over mainland
Alaska into next week after a relative lull towards the beginning
of the week. The extended period begins on Sunday evening with a
longwave trough over the mainland anchored by a weak upper low in
the vicinity of the AK Peninsula and Kodiak Island. This will
coincide with benign showery conditions across southern mainland
and Gulf regions through Monday. The main feature of interest in
the long term still looks to be a deep low developing at the base
of the longwave trough and moving north towards Kodiak Island
Tuesday into Wednesday as shortwave energy racing across the
southern Bering interacts with the AK pen low. This will send a
strong front towards the Gulf coast Tuesday afternoon, accompanied
by potentially heavy rains and strong winds. Some uncertainty
remains concerning some of the details that will impact strength,
timing, and placement of these features, however confidence is
increasing that a significant system could impact the Gulf Coast
region early to mid next week. Rain is also expected to spread
inland and then remain in the forecast for the southern mainland
through much of next week as the low slowly weakens in the
vicinity of Bristol Bay and broad onshore flow remains focused
over Southcentral AK.

Looking farther west, the Bering looks to remain in a much quieter
pattern next week in northerly flow between the mainland trough
and high pressure centered over eastern Russia. The previously
mentioned disturbance crossing the Bering will bring a chance of
rain to the Aleutian chain early in the week. Otherwise, a benign
cloudy regime will prevail across much of the region until the
next system enters the western Bering late in the week.
