Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
The two prominent weather features across the area this morning
are an upper level low over the Alaska Peninsula, and a stronger
low over the high Arctic. First, the low over the AK Peninsula is
embedded within a broad longwave trough. It is starting to slide
slowly to the north and east. So while Southwest AK has seen
cooler and rather wet conditions over the past couple of days,
this same weather is now sliding into Southcentral AK as well.
This is quite evident on the Kenai radar this morning with
widespread showers, some heavy in nature, tracking from southeast
to northwest along Turnagain Arm and up through the Matanuska and
Susitna Valleys. There are several shortwave troughs rotating
through the longwave trough which will impact weather over
Southern AK the next couple of days. Over the Bering, no strong
synoptic systems and broad cyclonic flow is once again keeping
widespread low clouds and patchy fog prevalent across the area.

The stronger low over the Arctic will be the key feature as we
move towards the weekend. It will provide the piece of energy that
move from north to south over Western AK and into the Gulf of AK
by Sun. With plenty of cold air associated with it, it will bring
a noticeable cooling trend and plenty of rain as it swings
through.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Models remain in fair agreement with some notable differences.
The primary difference affecting today's forecast is rainfall
across Cook Inlet this morning. Most of the models are hinting at
a marked uptick in precipitation over the next several hours,
likely due to some upper level support. However, radar and
satellite are not in lock-step with this, so we had to hand edit
the forecast to lower QPF amounts some. There is also some
question of thunderstorm activity over the AK Range later this
afternoon. Hi-res models were used for this portion of the
forecast. Beyond this, there are (as is often the case) some
timing differences with each wave of energy, but for the most
part, the overall pattern is resolved well by the models.

of MVFR conditions could occur between 14z-18z. The southeast
Turnagain Arm winds should push in to the airport again this
afternoon, but confidence in exact timing could be off an hour or
two. There is higher confidence that they will not be as strong as
they were Wednesday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

The weakening frontal band near the North Gulf coast this morning
moves north through Southcentral this morning. Cooler air spreads
in aloft behind this feature as a cold low aloft heads north.
This will bring a change from stratiform rain this morning to
more showery conditions by afternoon, especially inland.
Conditions may be unstable enough to kick off a few thunderstorms
over the Susitna Valley and along the Talkeetna Mountains and
Alaska Range this afternoon. Generally showery conditions will
continue inland into Friday. Coastal areas will see increased
chances of rain Friday/Friday night. A strengthening coastal
surface ridge combined with a weakening thermal trough inland will
produce gusty south winds along the Copper River Basin and east
winds along Turnagain Arm this afternoon/evening. Inland areas
will see generally winds on Friday. Large model differences on
Friday with low positions in the Gulf make for a challenging wind
forecast for Gulf marine zones. That said, winds in Gulf and
adjacent marine zones should see an uptick in speeds Friday night.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
A cloudy and showery pattern will continue today as an upper low
pressure over the Alaska Peninsula keeps the area in a moist
southeasterly flow. The afternoon hours will see an uptick in
shower activity, both in coverage and intensity. There will be
just enough instability during the afternoon hours that thunder
and lightning cannot be completely ruled out, but the chance is
low. Most of the showers will be in the Bristol Bay region and
Kuskokwim Valley, and to a lesser extent, the Kuskokwim Delta.

The system weakens on Friday, but another quickly comes in to take
it's place from the Bering Strait. The first cold air punch of the
season comes in late Friday night as a strong upper trough digs
southward. The front will spread rain from west to east on
Saturday, possibly with snow levels dropping to 3500 ft or so. The
cooler air mass will sit over the mainland through the weekend.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...
A much quieter pattern is setting up for the Bering as high
pressure sits over the far western Bering, while a weakening low
pressure system sits over the eastern Bering. Light northerly flow
sits between the two, with spotty precipitation and low clouds.
Not much change is expected until a cold front drops in from the
Bering Strait on Friday night, bringing some Gales to the far
northeastern Bering Sea.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7/ Saturday through Wednesday)...

On Saturday, an upper level low diving southward out of the Arctic
will move into Southwest Alaska. Widespread rain is expected over
much of mainland southern Alaska as a the cold air associated with
the low lifts the warmer air in place over the rest of
Southcentral. Thus, where precipitation ends up being most
concentrated, periods of heavy rainfall will be possible.

The model agreement with this feature is good on the large scale,
but differences in the timing, the depth of the trough, and any
embedded shortwaves still make pinpointing where the heaviest rain
will be a challenge to say the least. The instability in the
models has diminished with the feature, so any thunderstorm
potential now looks to be associated with any isolated cells
embedded within the broader precipitation shield.

By Sunday, the models once again diverge greatly regarding how the
pattern evolves. While the upper low over the Aleutians now no
longer appears to be a contributing factor in mainland
precipitation, the large disagreement with how quickly the upper
level low moves across Southcentral makes for a wide variation of
possibilities as to how the forecast evolves. The areas of
commonality include some degree of convective shower activity over
much of Southcentral...and a much cooler day as 850 mb
temperatures dip to near zero, with colder values over Southwest
Alaska.

Large disagreements in the models continue for Monday and beyond,
with very little that can be said definitively at this point.

Rain will move into south central Alaska Friday and Friday night.
Periods of rain are expected through Sunday morning. Rain could be
heavy at times, even for some inland locations. Cooler air will
also move into the area Saturday night into Sunday morning. Snow
is possible for the higher mountains Saturday night and Sunday
morning, with snow levels potentially dropping as low as 3500
feet in elevation.
