.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
Overall, little has changed in the general synoptic pattern since
Friday. A broad and complex upper trough with numerous low centers
covers much of the eastern Bering Sea and the North Pacific near
the Alaska Peninsula/western Gulf. Residing underneath these
upper features are a weakening front approaching Kodiak, a decaying
weather front over the Bering Sea, and a somewhat stronger low
center south of the Western Alaska Peninsula. The sensible
weather associated with this features are areas of rain across
Bristol Bay, eastern Bering, and the Alaska Peninsula. Gusty winds
were also observed across Bristol Bay and portions of Southwest
Alaska. Elsewhere, a strong upper ridge extending northwest across
Southcentral brought generally fair skies inland with some
stratus and patchy fog over the Gulf waters and local coastal
locations.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Models are in relatively good agreement through much of the short
term across Southcentral. Model differences start to creep in Tue
with a low that moves from the Kamchatka Peninsula to the western
Bering Sea. Currently prefer the GFS with this feature.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions and light winds will persist through today.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
Increased convective potential was the primary forecast challenge
today. These are generally air mass diurnal driven showers and
thunderstorms along the Talkeetna Mountains to the Alaska Range
this evening and again tomorrow. The NAM is showing more unstable
conditions and elevated CAPE values than the GFS. The important
thing is they both have the same areas in mind thus more confident
in the solutions. The secondary concern is the marine stratus
push up Cook Inlet and even possibly into Prince William Sound
tonight as surface ridging amplifies. Lastly, this unseasonably
hot weather will persist through Sunday, although Sunday will not
be as hot as today, before we see a return of the cooler moist
onshore flow Monday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
The southwest mainland will remain in moist east to southeast
flow between the low south of the Alaska Peninsula and the ridge
over Southcentral AK through Monday. This will yield a showery
pattern over the region for the next several days as several weak
waves embedded in the upper level flow move across the area from
east to west, with thunderstorm potential and coverage being the
primary forecast challenge. Extensive cloud cover from Bristol Bay
into the Kuskokwim Delta is expected to mitigate any previous
thunderstorm concerns for this evening. However, a weak thermal
trough is expected to develop by Sunday afternoon in response to
the warming trend in the interior. The thermal trough will provide
a focus for thunderstorm development across much of the region
Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening as clearing skies and daytime
heating help to generate modest instability. The most likely area
for thunderstorm development will span from the Western Alaska
Range westward through the Kuskokwim Valley and Delta, although
some development is also possible across portions of greater
Bristol Bay. Monday should bring cooler and cloudier conditions as
an inverted trough noses into the region, helping to limit
thunderstorm concerns a little more for the beginning of the week.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...
The most active weather will remain focused along the Akpen
through Sunday as the upper level low remains just to the south,
keeping periods of rain and Small Craft Advisory conditions over
the far southeast Bering into the beginning of the work week. The
remainder of the Bering will continue to be dominated by low
stratus and areas of fog through the weekend beneath a relatively
narrow ridge over the central Bering. A front will then enter the
western Bering Sun night and begin to spread rain across the
western half of the Aleutian chain through Monday.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...
A progressive wet weather pattern is expected during the long
range forecast. Beginning Tuesday night, an organized low pressure
system tracks north towards Bristol Bay with another low racing
east across the Bering. The Bering low wraps up into the low
tracking across the southwest Wednesday into Thursday. At the same
time, a third system from the Arctic pushes another quick moving
front toward the southwest system. By the end of the week, the low
over the southwest shifts east over the gulf and a ridge builds
back over the western Bering. This synoptic set up will bring
periods of appreciable rain across the southern mainland through
the end of the next week; although, rain tapers off across the
Bering and much of the southwestern region as the ridge builds.
All models are in relatively good agreement on the evolving
pattern so only minor adjustments were made for the afternoon
package.
