.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
There is a large and fairly strong upper low centered over Bristol
Bay moving to the south. A front associated with this low is
draped southeast to northwest across the Gulf of Alaska, and then
across the Kenai Peninsula. There is a surface low beneath the
upper low center, and another just southeast of Kodiak Island.
There is still plenty of moisture and showers around southern
Alaska, though it is diminishing from the north. There is an upper
level ridge over the central and western Bering Sea. There is an
upper level low to the west of the western Aleutians, rapidly
moving east into the ridge. An associated surface low is to the
south of the western Aleutians. Another weaker surface low is to
the north of the western Aleutians.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
The numerical models are in good over-all agreement for the short
term portion of the forecast. There are the usual types of
differences in how they handle the moisture and precipitation, but
this has only a small impact on the forecast. Confidence is thus a
little above normal.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions and light winds will persist. Rain will
taper off to showers this evening and end late tonight.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
Rainfall over the Cook Inlet region will persist through this
evening before gradually diminishing into more showery conditions
Thursday as the front continues to weaken over the area. The
cross-barrier flow continues to limit rainfall amounts over some
areas on the leeward side of the Chugach and Kenai Mountains.
Whereas in areas that are experiencing upsloping, such as Seward
and the north Gulf Coast, they will continue to see higher
rainfall amounts through Thursday. Gusty winds will persist over
the Prince William Sound area and through Turnagain Arm tonight,
then begin to diminish overnight tonight into Thursday morning as
the front weakens and pressure gradient slackens over the area. We
should see some clearing conditions Thursday night into Friday as
some higher pressure builds in from the west.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
The longwave pattern features a deep low over the Alaska Peninsula
and a ridge upstream. This low will continue to steer a fetch of
deep layer moisture into southwest Alaska, thus expect more
precipitation over the next couple of days. Meanwhile, upstream a
ridge axis will begin to push into the region resulting in a
warming and drying trend.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...
The synoptic pattern features a high amplitude ridge over the
Bering Sea and a low over Attu Island. The remnants of a frontal
boundary will keep moisture over portions of the Aleutians. As the
forecast period unfolds the ridge will continue to build allowing
for drier conditions and breaks in the clouds.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...

At the start of the long term forecast on Sunday a low amplitude
upper level ridge over the southern Bering Sea keeps the
Aleutians and southern mainland in a dry regime. A strong
shortwave racing east from the Kamchatka Peninsula Sunday night
increases chances for rain showers into Monday along the northern
and eastern Bering Sea as the wave rides along the periphery of
the ridge. This strong wave is expected to dive southeast over the
Kuskokwim Delta coast, allowing multiple weak short waves to
follow. This energy develops into a new upper level trough over
the Gulf of Alaska by the middle of next week. Overall, the
southern mainland continues in a dry pattern through the next week
with increasing chances for afternoon showers mainly along the
mountains.
