A 1004 mb low over Cape Newenham moves to the Northeast Pacific
Ocean at 1001 mb with the associated front sliding south of the 
Alaska Peninsula by Thu afternoon. A 1012 mb low 150 nm Northwest
of Attu becomes stationary and dissipates by Wednesday night. 
High pressure builds in over most of the Bering Sea by Thursday.

Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
A deep upper level trough is currently digging southeast across
the Bering Sea, supported by a 120kt jetmax located just to the
north and along the Aleutian Island chain. An upper level ridge
that had been over most of mainland Alaska the past week is
weakening as it moves off to the east into Canada. A weak upper
level shortwave trough embedded within the backside of the ridge
is transiting across southcentral Alaska as it exits the region.
An elongated occluded front associated with the Bering low is
currently pushing east through SW Alaska bringing a wide band of
rain, heavy at times, from the Seward Peninsula south to Kodiak.
Strong easterly to southerly winds associated with this front have
also been observed across Bristol Bay and the AKPEN, with winds
accelerating through terrain gaps and mountain passes on the
leeward side of the Aleutian Range. Rain just out ahead of the
front is beginning to make its way north into the Kenai Peninsula
and the Anchorage Bowl.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Models were in good agreement this morning regarding the placement
and strength of the upper level low over the Bering and its
associated surface front as it makes its way across SW AK and into
southcentral. Models begin to diverge as a surface low forms in
the Gulf of Alaska on Wednesday with disagreement regarding the
orientation of the pressure gradient and the amount of downsloping
the Anchorage Bowl and the western Kenai Peninsula will see.
Overall, a middle ground with a mix between the GFS and NAM was
the preferred solution with these areas seeing precipitation early
in the period before drying out as the flow turns more
southeasterly. More uncertainty comes later in the week regarding
the location of the surface low, with the GFS moving the system
well south of our area and the EC bringing the low center a bit
further north before eventually moving the system off to the east.

.AVIATION...
PANC...Light rain is expected today as a surface front moves into
the area this morning, but VFR conditions are expected to persist
over the terminal as downsloping from southeasterly flow will
keep the low levels relatively dry. Winds will be from the
southeast out of Turnagain Arm but are not expected to be strong
at the terminal as the low level jet will bend away to the south as
it reaches Cook Inlet.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

The main weather concern over the next several days is a well-
organized front approaching from the west, which will eventually
push northward and linger along the north Gulf Coast. Radar this
morning already indicates widespread rainfall spanning much of
Southwest Alaska, which will bring increasingly wet conditions to
much of Southcentral Alaska today as it pushes northward. Ahead
of this system, southwesterly upslope winds will support
widespread light rain in the Anchorage Bowl this morning. However,
by afternoon southeasterly flow will develop which will limit
rainfall across the Anchorage Bowl, Matanuska Valley and West
Kenai Peninsula. By Wednesday, wind gusts will increase across
Prince William Sound and Turnagain Arm and continue throughout
the day. With these stronger cross barrier winds, rainfall will
continue to be possible but limited across typically downsloped
locations on Wednesday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
The front over southwest Alaska continues to push through the area
and will exit to the east late this morning. Behind the front
lighter rain will persist as the parent low of the front tracks
south along the southwest coast. After the low makes it into the
North Pacific on Wednesday rain will diminish around the region.
However, afternoon showers will still be likely.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...
Rain will continue for much of the next couple of days as
shortwaves move through the predominantly westerly flow.
Wednesday night ridging will build in over the western Bering
which will start to clear out some of the rain. Ridging will then
be the dominant feature over the Bering extending across the
northern Bering and into mainland Alaska.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...

The models start out the long term in fairly good agreement, with
a surface low south of Kodiak and it's attendant upper level low
gradually moving south away from mainland Alaska. Thus, across the
mainland, typical summer ridging indicative of a developing
thermal trough develops. This will result in offshore flow across
Southcentral. Depending on how strong a northerly wave moving
eastward across northern Alaska gets, will determine thunderstorm
coverage. Most likely all it's energy misses the area to the
north, so any storms will likely be the typical mountain storms
that remain nearly stationary. Weak ridging persists away from the
coast, which should help make for a period of tranquil weather due
to a slowly changing pattern that keeps the active weather away
from the area right through the weekend. Temperature-wise, most
of the warmest air looks to remain over the Bering, so seasonable
conditions are likely with gradually increasing threats for
mountain storms expected through the weekend.
