.SYNOPSIS FOR THE NORTH GULF COAST+KODIAK ISLAND WATERS+
COOK INLET...

A ridge of high pressure over the northern Gulf will weaken and 
retreat to the eastern Gulf by Sat morning. A 1005 mb low near 
Sitkinak will remain nearly stationary before dissipating Sat 
morning. A 1009 mb low will develop 260 NM southeast of Middleton 
Island this afternoon and strengthen to 1005 mb as it moves to 90 NM 
east of Chiniak Sat afternoon.

Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
The predominant longwave aloft is centered over the northern
Bering Sea. The active portion of the jet remains further south
of the Aleutians, with an active extension well across the north
Pacific. Three shortwave troughs are on the southern periphery of
the longwave, and will be the focus for active weather in the
short term. The first is in the western Gulf of Alaska, with a
warm front extending from Kodiak Island southeastward through the
Panhandle. Out ahead of the front, steady rain is falling across
the northern Gulf. Despite moderate cross-barrier flow, steady
rain has been falling in Anchorage for most of the morning,
through the downslope hole has been growing northward steadily.
The likely culprit for precipitation in a downslope scenario is
lift from a mountain-induced wave cloud. The back edge of rain on
radar is very sharp and nearly stationary, much like a mountain
wave signature on satellite.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
There is good synoptic agreement among guidance in the short term.
Progression of each shortwave into the Gulf will lead to a new
consolidated upper low center, with another in the western Bering
Sea. No major discrepancy exists for the next few days.

&&

.AVIATION...
PANC...A light SE wind will extend from Turnagain Arm this
afternoon and evening. However, extensive rain and clouds in the
Susitna Valley could diminish heating in the area, which would
keep the strongest winds from bending up into Anchorage. Otherwise
light winds and VFR conditions will persist.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
Showers will continue to diminish in coverage through tonight
across the Mat-Su and Cook Inlet regions as the front gradually
weakens along the Gulf Coast and downslope flow begins to
reassert itself. The bulk of the shower activity will remain
confined to the Gulf Coast through Friday night as a disturbance
passing south of the Aleutian chain migrates eastward into the
Gulf and evolves into a closed upper low. Meanwhile, an easterly
wave riding along the periphery of the developing trough will help
to once again enhance shower potential on Saturday, especially
across Prince William Sound and into the Copper River Basin.
Modest instability resulting from a few breaks in the cloud cover
may be sufficient to generate a few thunderstorms across the
northern Alaska Range and the Talkeetna Mountains on Saturday
afternoon.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
The sensible weather over the Southwest Mainland will remain
dominated by the broad area of low pressure/troughing over the
Bering Sea and Northern Pacific. Multiple impulses embedded in
the flow pattern will track across the Southwest Mainland through
Saturday morning, keeping cloudy and showery conditions over the
area through much of the short term forecast. High pressure will
begin to build over the mainland Saturday afternoon into Sunday,
causing a few breaks in the clouds over parts of the Interior.
Along with the thermal trough nosing into the northern portions of
the southwest mainland this weekend as well, there is a slight
chance for some isolated thunderstorms to develop over the
northern and eastern mountains of the Kuskokwim Valley. However,
confidence in this remains low given that the models are
struggling to decide whether there will be enough forcing to aid
in convection over this area at all.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...

The upper level low will shift over eastern Russia briefly on
Friday before shifting back into the northern Bering by Sunday
morning. This ongoing broad area of low pressure and embedded
shortwaves will continue to influence the sensible weather
pattern through much of the short term forecast. As a result, rain
will continue over the eastern Aleutians and AKPen through late
tonight before transitioning to more showery conditions. Meanwhile
further west, another frontal system will move in over the
western Aleutians/Bering Friday morning, bringing another round of
precipitation and gusty winds to western and central Aleutians
Friday through Saturday afternoon. A brief period of upper level
ridging will build over the eastern Aleutians and AKPen Saturday
afternoon through Sunday morning, leading to mostly cloudy
conditions with scattered showers.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...

Beginning the extended period forecast Sunday night, there will be
a trough over the northwest Bering Sea and a low over the eastern
Gulf of Alaska. In between will be a skinny ridge axis aloft.
Northeast flow aloft over Southcentral will be favorable for quite
a bit of cloudiness and enhanced diurnal convection inland,
especially across Southcentral. However, 850 temperatures will
also be hovering around 5-9 C, so temperatures will finally be at
if not slightly above normal across most inland locations. For
those interested in the 4th of July weather, it is tentatively
looking rather decent across most of Alaska as the ridging begins
to make more of an impact, although diurnal convective activity
and clouds will still be possible.

There is pretty good consensus among the global numerical guidance
that the trough over the Bering Sea will move north toward the
North Slope and the Beaufort Sea by Tuesday afternoon, with the
low over the eastern Gulf of Alaska shifting south. What this
means is upper level ridging should expand over most of Southern
Alaska from Wednesday through Friday, bringing warming
temperatures, more sun, and drier weather. Given the rather cool
summer days most of Southern Alaska has been under the influence
of, this will represent a nice change.
