Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
There is an upper level low over the Gulf of Alaska, centered to
the west of Haida Gwaii. Weakly cyclonic to neutral flow is over
Southcentral Alaska. There is an upper level high over northwest
Alaska, centered over the southern Chukchi Sea. The flow is weakly
anti-cyclonic over the Kuskokwim Delta and weakly cyclonic over
the Bristol Bay area. Considerable showers continue over southwest
Alaska with plenty of moisture available, especially near Bristol
Bay. There is an upper level low centered just south of the
western Aleutians. An associated (fairly weak) front stretches
from the eastern Aleutians westward across the southern Bering
Sea.

&&

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
The numerical models are in rather good agreement through the
short term portion of the forecast (Friday afternoon) for the
upper levels and surface pressure. There are some differences in
moisture and especially instability over the area, with the GFS
generally showing lower instability than the other models. Since
convection is an important part of the forecast, confidence is
thus near normal.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

The upper level flow pattern remains weakly out of the northeast,
but rather extensive cloud cover today has kept temperatures
cooler once again. However, weak northerly low level flow across
the Susitna Valley has allowed for enough destabilization for the
development of isolated thunderstorms. This activity will drift
south and may clip some lower elevations areas south of the
Talkeetna Mountains and Alaska Range, but otherwise, expect
largely dry conditions for lower elevations areas.

Thursday will start off dry, but with increasing offshore flow
from Prince William Sound east associated with a North Gulf Coast
trough of low pressure, expect warming temperatures and continued
trends toward less clouds. The current thinking is southerly flow
up Cook Inlet, while rather weak, will be enough to stabilize
areas around Anchorage and the Chugach, thus keeping thunderstorms
limited to interior mountains like the Talkeetna Mountains and
Alaska Range/Wrangell Mountains. In other words, a bit of summer
returns Thursday.

Friday, there forecast gets a little more convoluted as an upper
level COL forms over SOuthcentral. This means weak steering flow
and hard to pick out upper level wave energy, but it is expected
to be more unstable than Thursday, with the possibility of both
stronger and more widespread mountain thunderstorms. It will also
be warmer as another rather nice day graces Southcentral after a
slow start to summer.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
The thermal trough is set up over southwest Alaska and will be the
focus of any convective activity for the next couple of days. It
extends along the Yukon and Kuskokwim River valleys into the
interior. Moisture moving in from the east will blossom into
showers and potentially thunderstorms this evening from Bethel
south to the Kilbuck Mountains. Extensive cloud cover over the
Bristol Bay region will inhibit convective development today into
this evening. As we move into Thursday the thermal trough
intensifies as low level warm air increases and 850 MB
temperatures will be warming to near 8 Celsius. The Kuskokwim
Delta will be marginally unstable tomorrow and higher CAPE is
indicated in the models along the Aleutian Mountains and the
Alaska Range.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...
The gale strength low south of Amchitka will work its way
southeast as it weakens. The associated front is stalled across
the southern Bering Sea through Unalaska and will weaken and
dissipate as it slowly drifts south through tonight as a trough of
low pressure. A ridge builds into the western Bering Sea through
Friday. The net result will be diminishing wind and decreased
rainfall overnight and Thursday.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...

Friday night through the weekend the weather pattern across the
southern mainland will be influenced by a thermal low across the
interior. This set up brings warmer temperatures along with
afternoon and evening showers with isolated thunderstorms mainly
along the mountain ranges and across much of Southwest. To the
west...A ridge pattern across the Bering keeps a quiet regime for
the weekend with a slow change late Sunday into Monday as energy
from the North Pacific and Kamchatka propagates to the western
waters. The eastern Aleutians and Alaska Peninsula will see a few
showers through the weekend as an upper low south of the chain
tracks slowly towards the gulf.

Models continue to struggle with the progression the low south of
the Alaska Peninsula at the start of next week, so only minor
changes were made in the extended forecast with the updated WPC
data weighted heavily toward the ensemble means of the ECMWF and
GFS after Monday. The main low will likely stay near the southern
gulf through the middle of next week bringing southerly flow and
a continuous stream of moisture. Models have been in better
agreement with the next organized system which is progged to move
into the western Aleutians and Bering Monday into Tuesday.
