.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
The remnants of an upper level low continue to churn over the
Gulf of Alaska. To the west, there is a more potent and better
organized low south of Adak. There is an upper level high over
northwest Alaska spanning from the Bering Land Bridge National
Preserve to the Bering Sea. With cyclonic flow in place over the
Gulf Of Alaska...the flow aloft over southern Alaska is oriented
north-northeast. The radar at Bethel and the models continue to
ping into showers for portions of southwest Alaska today...with a
generally moist airmass over southern Alaska.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
The models are in sync through Friday with good run to run
continuity. The NCEP RMOP is in very confident territory through
24 hrs and then above average for the Aleutians and southwest AK
until the weekend.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

A pattern shift is currently shaping up for the next several days,
with the development of an interior thermal trough with much
warmer Southcentral temperatures, and a greater chance for the
development of diurnal thunderstorms. Today, showers and isolated
thunderstorms are expected to develop along the Alaska Range, and
drift southward today in the steering flow into the Susitna Valley
and Copper River Basin. Tomorrow, showers will be enhanced along
the Chugach and Talkeetna Mountains with northerly to
northwesterly upslope flow. As a result, a few more lightning
strikes are possible along the Chugach and Talkeetna Mountains,
but are unlikely to drift into the lower elevations of Anchorage.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions and light winds will persist. A few
afternoon showers could form along the nearby Chugach.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
The Southwest Alaska region has a thermal trough setting up over
the next several days. Therefore, look for isolated thunderstorms
to develop over the Alaska Range, and the Ahklun Mountains
spreading into the Kuskokwim Delta Wednesday afternoon/evening
time-frame. By Thursday as the thermal trough strengthens, the
afternoon/evening thunderstorms will develop over the Alaska
Range, and the Kuskokwim Mountains. These isolated thunderstorms
track southward into the Alaska Peninsula, Ahklun Mountains, and
the Kuskokwim Delta region due to northerly storm motion. The
other forecast challenge comes with the marine layer stratus/fog.
Due to the southwesterly flow the aforementioned weather
phenomena will track along the Bristol Bay, and the Alaska
Peninsula coastline through Thursday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...
The main feature is the gale force 991 mb low located just south
of Shemya. This synoptic feature continues to track southeast into
the North Pacific Ocean through rest of the week. The associated
front continues to be stretched and weakening as it remains
positioned in the lower western/central Bering. This will bring
rain accompanied by easterly small craft advisory winds to the
Bering, and the Western/Central Aleutians. Meanwhile, the
persistent upper level ridging over the northern/eastern Bering
continues to produce marine layer stratus with fog.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...

The pattern shifts slowly on Friday with the southern mainland
warming inland under a ridge aloft with cooler temperatures along
the coasts and surrounding waters. Low pressure will surround
this ridge with centers over the Southeast, eastern Brooks Range
and another just south of the Alaska Peninsula. This synoptic set
up remains through Saturday, then the low over the Southeast is
progged to get kicked east by the low near the Alaska Peninsula.
Models are in agreement with the general trends, but confidence is
lower than normal as consistency still lacks on the progression
of the low centers between models and also from run to run.

The highest chances for rain Friday through Sunday will be along
the mountain ranges and across the Southwest due to a weak
thermal trough developing across the interior.
