and Central Aleutians enters the southern Bering and Eastern 
Aleutians and weaken by Wed afternoon, and persists through Thu 
morning. High pressure remains over the eastern Bering through Thu.

Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
The most dominant feature on the satellite this morning is a
weakening baroclinic zone just north of the area, which is
bringing widespread wetting rains to much of the interior. Just
to the south, the narrow ridge of high pressure over Southcentral
and the Kuskokwim Valley that brought clearing skies to most
areas on Sunday, is beginning to break down as a shortwave over
the Gulf continues to move northward. This shortwave is causing
for the redevelopment of rain showers over the north Gulf Coast,
which will continue developing over the course of this morning.
Another shortwave that is beginning to enter the Bering sea from
the Kuskokwim Delta brought showers and even a few lightning
strikes to the Delta coast on Sunday. These shortwaves are
rotating around an upper level low centered just south the AK pen,
which will continue to slowly track into the southern Gulf today.
Over the Bering Sea, the ridge that had been centered over the
western Bering over the past few days is weakening in advance of a
North Pacific low that is expected to move through the Western
Bering today.

&&

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
With continued good synoptic agreement at the surface into mid-
week, the primary concern from the models continues to be centered
around the arctic trough that will descend into the Mainland
today. There has been one big improvement with the 00z EC, which
has trended back towards the NAM/GFS/GEM in both the location and
strength of this trough. The previous 2 runs had been
significantly faster and deeper with this feature, and were
treated as outliers. Even with this better agreement there remains
uncertainty in the rain forecast from the Anchorage Bowl
northward into the Susitna Valley which has consistently been on
the very western edge of the precip shield. There is improving
confidence that most of Southcentral will see at least a brief
round of rain showers on Tuesday from this feature, however if
widespread rain reaches as far west as the EC and GEM are
indicating many areas could see a prolonged period of wetting
rains. Further to the east over the Copper River Basin there is
much better agreement that this trough will bring widespread rains
to the area beginning as early as this afternoon.

.AVIATION...
PANC...The current gusty SE winds are expected to diminish by mid
morning as the pressure gradient along the gulf coast weakens,
then shift to a W-SW sea breeze as weak up-inlet flow develops.
Otherwise VFR conditions will continue until late this evening
when ceilings around 5000 ft and rain move into the area.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

The upper level trough which brought widespread rain to the
interior yesterday is now pushing southward across the Alaska
Range into northern portions of the Susitna Valley, and the
Copper River Basin. While models indicate less surface forcing and
upslope flow than they indicated yesterday, upper level forcing
should be sufficient to support a broad area of showers.
Precipitation should push southward towards the Gulf of Alaska
throughout much of the day as the trough drifts southward as well.

It is uncertain how far south precipitation will occur across the
Anchorage Bowl area and western Kenai this evening. The sounding
this morning still indicates the presence of a prominent inversion
at midlevels which may help to prevent the formation of much
diurnal convection ahead of the trough. As a result, afternoon and
evening showers will likely be limited to the Chugach Mountains,
and any showers will dissipate as they move away from the steep
terrain.

Unsettled weather will continue into Tuesday, as another upper
level wave drifts into Southcentral from the north. However,
forcing will be weak enough that the majority of precipitation
again will fall mainly along the mountains. Cold air will
continue to push in at upper levels and help to steepen lapse
rates in mid-levels. However, diurnal heating will be limited due
to widespread cloud cover.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
The majority of the Southwest Alaska region will be under the
influence of an upper level high pressure located over the Bering
Strait. An associated ridge extends southward into the Kuskokwim
Delta area. While at the surface there is a week 1008 mb low over
the Saint Lawrence Island, and is resulting in light southwesterly
to southerly onshore flow into the Kuskokwim Delta this morning.
Therefore, look for marine layer stratus, and areas of fog to
advect into the aforementioned region. This fog will stay around
through the morning hours before dissipating by midday today.
Otherwise, the Alaska Peninsula is receiving the affects from a
weak shortwave this morning resulting in rain before transitioning
to a showery regime through Tuesday as another weak shortwave
tracks through the AOR. This synoptic feature combined with the
thermal trough setting up over the Lower Kuskokwim Valley will
trigger some isolated thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon/evening. Due
to the northerly storm motion, these isolated thunderstorms will
move into the Bristol Bay interior during the same time-frame.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...
There is a weak 1013 mb surface high developing over the lower
eastern Bering, and upstream a ridge of high pressure is moving
into the central Bering/Aleutians. Therefore, look for marine
layer stratus/fog to develop with possible reduced visibilities
this morning. While the Western Aleutians has a frontal boundary
entering the aforementioned region before stretching from the
western Bering through the Eastern Aleutians by late Tuesday
evening. The low pressure system will become elongated along the
Western/Central Aleutians bringing widespread rain/stratus as we
head into the midweek.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...

By Wednesday afternoon, the large upper level low in the southern
Gulf will be centered along 140W with a long trough extending
back to the west and connecting with the upper level low centered
just south of the western Aleutians. An upper level ridge centered
over the Chukchi Sea will extend west across the northern half of
mainland Alaska. At the surface, a weak thermal trough will extend
from the Yukon Territory along and just of the Alaska range to the
west-southwest over the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. To the south,
surface ridging will centered over the northern and western Gulf
coast with onshore flow bringing a cool, mostly cloudy marine air
inland to much of Southcentral Alaska.

A developing surface low south of the upper low in the Gulf and
associated with a strong zonal jet pushing in around 45N, will
turning the northeast Wednesday night, rotating around the SE side
of the upper low and swing into British Columbia Thursday. The
upper low will shift north to the eastern Gulf Thursday and then
follow the surface system inland, crossing the Southeast Alaska
Panhandle Thursday night and moving into the southern Yukon
Territory Friday. Surface ridging will push rapidly north into
Gulf on Friday once the upper low is inland. Strong pressure
rises will bring increasing southerly winds up Resurrection Bay
and Cook Inlet as well as some southeasterly winds into Prince
William Sound. Southeasterly gap winds will be further
accelerated through locations like the Copper River Valley,
Turnagain Arm and Knik River Valley.

The shifting of the upper level low inland will deepen the
thermal trough over interior Alaska Friday and Saturday as
southerly winds downslope across the Alaska Range. This will
strengthen the portion of the trough extending into Southwest
Alaska as well bringing an increase in thunderstorm activity to
that area starting Friday afternoon and evening and continuing
into Saturday. On Sunday, a vertically stacked low moves south of
the Alaska Peninsula and sends a front north reaching the Alaska
Peninsula and western Gulf on Monday. Meanwhile, upper level
ridging builds from western Canada over eastern mainland Alaska
Monday and Tuesday.
