.SYNOPSIS FOR THE NORTH GULF COAST+KODIAK ISLAND WATERS+
COOK INLET...

A front pushes across the Gulf ahead of a 992 mb low centered 330
nm south of Kodiak City today. The low then tracks northward to 90
nm southeast of Kodiak City at 1001 mb by tonight, with the front
pushing further inland along the Northern Gulf coast. The system 
will then dissipate over the Barren Islands by late Sunday 
morning. A weak 1006 mb low 90 nm east of Sand Point will track 70
nm southeast of Kodiak City by Monday morning.

Updated Long Term Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
The upper level high is centered over the AlCan border in the
Copper River Basin bringing very warm temperatures there today.
An elongated upper level low is stretched from the western
Aleutians to just south of the Alaska Peninsula. These features
are bringing fairly strong south to southeast flow over
southcentral Alaska and Southwest mainland Alaska today.
The atmosphere from the Western Gulf of Alaska into Bristol Bay
has been quite stable today with large areas of fog and stratus
persisting into the afternoon. The Kuskokwim Delta has been very
stable into early afternoon but the low level cap has broken and
some weak instability in the area is kicking off a few showers.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Models are finally in good agreement through the weekend with
convergence on the track for the low heading toward Kodiak from
the southwest and the low entering the eastern Bering Sea from
Southwest mainland Alaska. The trend that started yesterday moving
the main plume of moisture southwest of Anchorage and most of the
Susitna Valley verified as the majority of rain has been over the
Kenai Peninsula and southwestern part of the Susitna Valley.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions will persist. Southeast winds will develop
late this afternoon and then diminish again by late evening.
Tomorrow will see a similar pattern with the winds.

.FIRE WEATHER...
The Red Flag Warning in the Copper River Basin will end this
evening. Although it will remain windy Saturday, the humidity
should be much high and temperatures significantly lower than
today. Overall mild and moist conditions will prevail over
southern mainland Alaska through the weekend.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
The weekend will feature a return of cooler temperatures across
the area as the upper level ridge centered over the Copper River
Basin is replaced by a deep trough lifting northward through the
gulf. This will cause 850 mb temperatures to plummet by 5-7
degrees C by Saturday afternoon, resulting in temperatures
dropping back into the 50s in most locations and the mid 60s in
the Copper Basin and the Susitna Valley. Meanwhile, onshore flow
will keep showers focused along the gulf coast, with inland
locations mostly staying downsloped while maintaining a slight
chance of showers through Sunday. Surface ridging along the coast
will support gusty winds through Turnagain Arm that may also come
into south and west Anchorage at times given the lack of a
significant down inlet pressure gradient.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
Mostly cloudy and rainy conditions will persist for the weekend.
An upper level jet poking into the Alaska Range will spread steady
rain over the Kuskokwim Valley tonight into Saturday. Spottier
precipitation will set up over the Greater Bristol Bay area along
with cooler temperatures and light winds. The cooler and moist air
mass stays overhead through the weekend keeping at least a good
chance of rain in the forecast.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...
Broad low pressure will keep cloudy and rainy conditions over most
of the Bering Sea through the weekend. As this system is mature
and weakening winds will not be an issue. Areas of fog will set up
over most of the Bering through the weekend as stable air from
Russia drifts overhead. A new front enters the western Aleutians
late Sunday with a slight uptick in winds and rain.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...
Models seem to be converging on a common solution over Mainland
Alaska beginning on Monday, with a trough digging out of the Yukon
across Interior Alaska, then weakening as it reaches Southwest and
Southcentral Alaska. Thus, have trended toward a wetter start to the
week, with good potential for steady rain to move into the Kuskokwim
Valley and northern portions of the Susitna Valley and Copper River
Basin sometime Monday. The remainder of the area will see mostly
cloudy skies with increasing showers as the trough stalls and
weakens overhead Monday night through Tuesday.

For the remainder of the week, there is currently a lack of strong
forcing mechanisms to help guide the forecast. Instead, it appears
to be a combination of weak ridging and transient waves, suitable
for diurnal convection. Used a broad-brush approach to the precip
forecast, with showers focused along favored locations, including
the mountains and inland areas of Southcentral and Southwest Alaska.
Although the forecast is for mostly cloudy skies, there is potential
for periods of sun Wednesday through Friday. Thus, would expect
warming temperatures mid to late in the week.

Wind-wise, guidance generally depicts a broad surface high over the
Gulf of Alaska mid to late week. This is favorable for stronger sea
breezes, assuming there is some sunshine inland. More notable for
some, the typical gap winds along Turnagain Arm, Knik River Valley,
and the Copper River should be on the weaker side.

Out west, low pressure (and associated frontal boundary) will park
itself along the Aleutians, bring stronger winds and steady rain.
The bulk of the Bering Sea will remain seasonably benign, with areas
of low clouds and fog.
