.SYNOPSIS FOR THE NORTH GULF COAST+KODIAK ISLAND WATERS+
COOK INLET...

A front pushes across the Gulf ahead of a 992 mb low centered 330
nm south of Kodiak City today. The low then tracks northward to 90
nm southeast of Kodiak City at 1001 mb by tonight, with the front
pushing further inland along the Northern Gulf coast. The system 
will then dissipate over the Barren Islands by late Sunday 
morning. A weak 1006 mb low 90 nm east of Sand Point will track 70
nm southeast of Kodiak City by Monday morning.

Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
Widespread cloudcover that brought rain showers to areas of the
South Mainland on Thursday continues to spread northward into the
interior along the western edge of a ridge of high pressure nosing
into the eastern interior from the Yukon Territory. This ridge
will slide westward into the Southcentral today, allowing for
clearing skies and warming temperatures to develop. Over the
Aleutian Islands a North Pacific low is beginning to move through
the Eastern Aleutians/AK pen as it begins to track into the Gulf.
This low is also allowing for the extensive fog and stratus that
had developed over the Bering to begin to scour out from the west
and high pressure begins to diminish. Ahead of this incoming low,
weak onshore flow has allowed for the Bering fog/stratus to spread
eastward into Bristol Bay, which is also beginning to move inland.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
The models remain in good synoptic agreement into Saturday, with
the main forecast challenge coming from the precip potential over
the Gulf coast this evening. All of the models are interestingly
enough bringing widespread rainfall to the Gulf coast this evening
as the mid-level ridge builds in, however with very weak upper
level dynamics and little development upstream this was generally
ignored for the morning package. Instead the precipitation
forecast for much of Southcentral was decreased, so satellite
trends will need to be monitored today to confirm this doesn't
need to be brought back into the forecast.

&&

.AVIATION...
PANC...SE winds will develop beginning late this afternoon as a
weak low makes landfall over Prince William Sound. This will
produce a slightly delayed timing than is typical for this time of
year, as the strongest of winds will likely not develop until the
early evening, and then persist into the late evening before
beginning to diminish. Otherwise VFR conditions will continue with
ceilings remaining above 5000 ft until late tonight.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

An obstinate upper level blocking ridge will ensure a day of sun
and warmer temperatures across much of the Copper River Basin.
This ridge will also help to stall and significantly weaken a
front as it tries to push northward along the Kenai Peninsula
today. Each successive model run indicates drier conditions
across the Susitna Valley, Matanuska Valley and Anchorage Bowl, so
it is likely that conditions will be warmer than previously
expected with an isolated shower in the evening. While clouds
will dominate across the Kenai Peninsula, showers will generally
be focused along upslope areas. Cooler conditions will follow
Saturday as an upper level trough is finally able to push the
ridge eastward, increasing the chance for showers and spreading
more clouds across the area.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

The region will remain on the dividing line between upper
troughing centered over the coast and a very strong high pressure
ridge over eastern Southcentral. Rain over the Kuskokwim Delta in
association with the first shortwave trough will lift north,
leaving only isolated to scattered rain showers over most of
Southwest today. The next wave of moisture is expected to begin
moving over the region late tonight into Saturday, bringing more
rain and showers to the region. Cooler and more moist temperatures
will continue through Saturday night as yet another shortwave
trough moves up into Southwest from the Western Gulf of AK.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...

Weak high pressure over the Central Bering Sea will slowly weaken
as a low over the North Pacific moves toward Kodiak Island and
another broader upper low forms over the Central Aleutians. Rain
and showers will be more prevalent across the entire Aleutian
Chain and the Pribilof Islands as these low pressure systems
interact with one another.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...
There is decent agreement with the models moving into the extended
timeframe with both deterministic solutions and the ensembles. The
upper low that moves south of the Gulf of Alaska Sunday night
looks to stay around that same location for much of the week. This
will bring more moisture and rain to the southern mainland with
the majority of the rain along the coast. There is also better
agreement with the high that looks to push in over northwest
Alaska Monday night. The agreement comes with the guidance now
favoring a weaker high that pushes off to the west on Wednesday
and will not have as much of a significant impact for the
southern mainland.
