COOK INLET...

A front in the southwestern Gulf will move to the northeastern
Gulf tonight and then will move inland Sun afternoon. A 985 mb 
low 560 nm south of Sitkinak moves over Port Heiden at 976 mb 
tonight and then moves into the Bering. A second low at 957 mb 
develops 400 nm southwest of Sitkinak Sun night.

Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
Upper level ridging remains in place over the Eastern Aleutians,
SW Alaska, and into the Gulf/Southcentral, though upper level
troughs to the north and south are acting to flatten and weaken
the ridge. Overall this has lead to calm and stagnant conditions
across the southern mainland which continues to lead to low
clouds and patchy fog across the area, though not as widespread as
it has been the past couple of days. Weak off-shore flow has lead
to clearing this evening over the Kuskokwim Delta leading to
temperatures falling well into the negatives. Clearing over the
Prince William Sound has also led to surprisingly cold
temperatures at Valdez and Cordova, where temperatures have been
hovering near the 0 degree mark overnight. Further west, a pair of
lows south of the western and central Aleutians are moving
northwest towards the island chain bringing gale force winds and
rain from Shemya to Atka.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Models are handling the progression of the low complex south of
the Aleutians well right now but begin to diverge by Saturday
night as a third low swings around the base of the upper level
trough up into southwest Alaska. The EC/GFS seem to be more
consistent and better aligned compared to the NAM, which has been
an outlier. So the morning forecast package used primarily the
GFS/EC blend with the inherited afternoon forecast. Regardless,
there is pretty good agreement that a front will move through the
Northern Gulf/Prince William Sound bringing very heavy
precipitation to the coast as well as strong winds Sunday and
Monday.

.AVIATION...
PANC...Current webcams and METARS from around the Anchorage Bowl
show low stratus and fog hanging over the eastern part of town,
with Bryant Army Airfield the only ASOS reporting LIFR conditions
while all others in the bowl reporting VFR. This fog bank is not
expected to advect back towards the west so VFR conditions with
only vicinity fog were left in the TAF this morning. More mid-
level moisture is expected to move in this afternoon out ahead of
the next system which should end the fog threat for good.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
Areas/patchy fog will continue over portions of the Anchorage
Bowl and across the Copper River Basin today and possibly tonight.

The focus then shifts to a strong weather front entering the
southwestern Gulf of Alaska late tonight. This front will signal a
change in the pattern as it heads north across the Gulf Saturday
and Saturday night. Precipitation over Kodiak should start as snow
but will quickly turn to rain or mix Saturday morning with warm
advection. Rain across Kodiak will likely be moderate at times
Saturday afternoon/Saturday night with strong easterly flow and a
slow north progression of the frontal boundary. Precipitation
will likely spread north to the Kenai Peninsula(mainly eastern
end) Saturday/Saturday night and should be predominately snow
inland with a mix along the immediate coast. The cold air west of
the Chugach/Kenai mountains should be sufficiently deep to
mitigate downslope effects Saturday night and could allow some
light snow to make it west of the mountains. Windy conditions will
accompany the front with gales developing across many gulf marine
areas Saturday/Saturday night. Also gap flows will likely develop
across Turnagain Arm/Portage Valley during the day Saturday and
strengthen Saturday night.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
The pattern begins to change today as a front approaches the
Aleutian chain. This will help displace the cold air mass
currently overhead. Expect winds to turn to the southwest this
evening for the Bristol Bay area, which will bring temperatures
into the 20s and 30s, spreading across the rest of the mainland on
Saturday. Most areas in the lees of the mountains will remain
downsloped and dry while upslope areas will get steady snow,
eventually changing to rain. Areas of the Wood River mountains
will see areas of blowing snow before temperatures warm as will
coastal areas of the Kuskokwim Delta. Gusty southeasterly winds
will accompany the frontal passage Friday night into Saturday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...
A frontal boundary will hang up just north of the chain today
while a new low pressure system develops between Atka and
Unalaska. The front will be solid gale-force. Another disturbance
will develop along the front for the Eastern Aleutians and Alaska
Peninsula on early Saturday. Much of the central and western
Bering Sea will see instability snow showers continue through the
forecast period.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...
A pattern shift for the southern tier of the state is still on
track to begin this weekend, ushering in warmer and wetter weather
for the New Year. Models have been consistent in strengthening the
ridge over the Panhandle, allowing a broad longwave trough to set
up over the western portion of the state. This should allow the
synoptic flow to become more southerly through the Gulf and
Southwest Alaska. The first front to encroach upon the mainland
will appear on Saturday, bringing southeasterly flow into the Gulf
and precipitation to the Kodiak area. Models have not been very
consistent on the speed of this front, either run-to-run or
between solutions. All runs seem to be slowing this feature,
which seems likely, since it usually takes some time for fronts
to make their way northward with a blocking ridge over the
mainland.

Right now, this weekend's weather looks like it will remain snowy
for the Kenai Peninsula, with a mixed bag for precipitation over
the Southwest. Southeasterly winds will be gusty as the front
moves onshore, causing downsloping and little precipitation in the
usual leeside areas. By the middle of next week, the longwave
pattern will have completely transitioned to a longwave trough and
southerly flow over the mainland, which means a stormier pattern
through the end of the week.
