Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A high amplitude pattern over Alaska features a ridge over the
Southeast and a broad trough over the Bering. An atmospheric river
over two thousand miles in length is streaming between the two
upper level systems. At the surface, a low is over the western
Gulf is pushing a front across the coast of Prince William Sound
and the Northeast Gulf. Rain is developing along the boundary over
the sound with a cooler air mass inland changing precipitation
over to snow across the Copper River Basin. The front extends
westward across to Bristol Bay, however precipitation is mostly
downsloped along low level easterly flow. A north to south band of
precipitation has aligned just east of the Aleutian Range with
snow and rain along this boundary.

&&

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models are in good general synoptic agreement through Thursday,
however there are differences between the surface mesoscale
features. Run to run consistency is also lacking which leads to
greater uncertainty on precipitation placement, types, and
amounts. Models have shifted the track of the surface low to the
east when moving toward Southcentral tonight. Therefore, updates
were made to decrease snow amounts along the western Kenai, Anchorage
Bowl, Matanuska and Susitna Valleys.

.AVIATION...
PANC...Snow will back into the area from the east overnight
through early Tuesday morning. The airport will be right in the
vicinity of the western-most edge of snow, so there is quite a
bit of uncertainty on the duration and intensity of snow. There is
even a chance it will not snow at all. For now, have included a
brief period of MVFR conditions when snow seems most likely. No
matter what happens in the morning, expect improving conditions
through the day.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

A strong southerly upper level jet will focus a narrow fire hose
of sub-tropical moisture directly at the Gulf Coast and Southern
Alaska beginning tonight through tomorrow night. An initial front
washed up along the coast will continue to bring rain and snow
along the Gulf Coast this evening before the main plume of
moisture slams into the area tonight. The focus of the heaviest
precipitation will be on the Central and Eastern Gulf Coast
including Valdez and Cordova. Very heavy snow fall is expected in
the mountains, including Thompson Pass, which will see between 3-4
ft of snow through the day tomorrow with the greatest rates
falling between midnight tonight and late afternoon Wednesday.
Snow will mix with or turn to rain just outside Valdez which will
limit snow amounts in town there. Due to the depth of moisture,
precipitation is expected to stay intact as it makes its way
across the Chugach and into the Copper River Basin, bringing heavy
snow from Glennallen southward as well as more moderate amounts
west towards Eureka, with 6-14" expected in these areas. Some rain
may mix in later in the day for lower elevations along the Copper
River, like Chitina, decreasing total snow amounts there.

For populated areas further east, including Anchorage and the
Matanuska Valley, there is increasing confidence that the western
periphery of the precipitation will remain just to the east,
keeping snow totals lower than originally expected. Anchorage may
pick up an inch of snow, though further east locations like
Palmer may see a few more inches through the day tomorrow.

A transitory short wave ridge builds in Wednesday night as the
system pushes north and east out of the area. Another low follows
quickly behind bringing another plume of sub-tropical moisture to
the coast by Thursday morning. The focus with this storm will be a
bit further west but the low will be stronger leading to increased
southeasterly flow and downsloping, limiting precipitation again
to to coast with even warmer air expected to push into the area.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
A fairly deep long-wave trough will persist across the central
Bering Sea through the eastern Aleutians/western AKpen. With
southwest Alaska being on the eastern edges of the trough,
periodic vort maxes rounding the base of said trough will eject
north northwestward across the region. The first such disturbance
is moving beginning to cross the AKpen into eastern Bristol Bay,
with light to moderate snow occurring just east of King Salmon,
stretching north towards Koliganek. As the low drifts of to the
north northwest, the associated edge of precipitation will follow
suite. Additional snowfall accumulations should generally be up to
2 inches, but locally higher amounts are possible where any
mesoscale banding develops as the low draws near.

Precipitation will become more showery for tomorrow as the area
will lie in between systems, with perhaps a few showers touching
the coast as they lie closer to the trough axis. The next main
system looks to move through during the day Friday, bringing more
precipitation back to the region. Once again mainly snow is
expected, except along and east of the Alaska Range, where warm
advection ahead of the disturbance may bring up enough warm air
for a mix of rain and snow to be possible. At this time, amounts
look to be fairly similar to this evenings system.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...

A broad troughy pattern will persist through the end of the work
week across the much of the Bering Sea to the central Aleutians,
with several smaller areas of low pressure slowly trekking across
the region. Abundant cold air aloft will continue to reside, with
all critical thickness values indicating snow showers will be the
predominant precipitation type, although some rain may mix in at
times due to the latent head flux off the waters plus localized
warm advection ahead of each low. With water temperatures in the
30s and 850mb temps of -8 deg. C or colder, sufficient (albeit
weak) instability will be present for an isolated thunderstorm or
two to develop. However, timing the bursts of increased ascent
with disturbances aloft in the jet stream which provide bursts of
increased ascent, are problematic at best to time. Thus,
confidence in temporal placement wasn't high enough to include
thunder in and of the forecast zones at this time.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...

The long term forecast shows no significant change in the overall
weather pattern that is currently locked in place. Strong ridging
over the eastern Gulf of Alaska will continue to steer numerous
weather systems into southern Alaska, and especially southcentral
Alaska. Multiple rounds of heavy rain (and mountain snow) are
likely along the north Gulf Coast and Prince William sound through
this weekend. Meanwhile, most inland areas will be shielded from
most or all of this precipitation. There is some model agreement
on a stronger and more significant low climbing up the ridge and
slamming into southern Alaska with a strong front in the
Sunday/Monday time period, but details are still very much unclear
at this time.

Meanwhile, weather across the Bering Sea and Aleutians will be
unsettled but actually more benign than normal. No major storm
systems (i.e. storm-force or stronger) are expected in the next
week.
