.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
Water Vapor satellite imagery shows three low pressure systems
spinning around the state early this morning. The storm system
that brought strong winds across the Bering locations is now
centered along the southern gulf and closing off it's connection
to the parent low over the Arctic. The other low is moving up from
the North Pacific spinning approximately 500 miles south of
Shemya. This system is pumping deep subtropical moisture up
through the central Aleutians. At the surface, the pattern is
relatively weaker than previous days with a surface low stacked
under the gulf storm system. Rain is developing around this system,
however it is weakening on its eastward track.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Models are in very good agreement with the synoptic pattern
through early week with only minor edits needed mainly using
influences of the NAM and GFS models.

PANC...VFR conditions and light winds will persist.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

Satellite imagery this morning continues to indicate the low
pressure system spinning southeast from Kodiak further into the
Gulf of Alaska. As a result, today rainfall will be much less
widespread along the gulf coast and winds will continue to relax.
However, an upper level wave will linger just long enough to
support a few light showers along the north gulf coast into this
afternoon. By Monday, a new low will quickly push into the region
again from the northwest. Downsloping is not expected to be
significant, and showers are expected in the typically downsloped
areas of the Anchorage Bowl, west Kenai Peninsula. However, this
system progresses across the region rapidly and much drier weather
will become established across the region by Tuesday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
In the wake of the recent low passage, northerly flow will
continue. Some of the coastal communities may experience fog this
morning. Weak energy embedded in cyclonic flow will result in
light shower activity later today and then diminish. Looming
upstream, the models are pinging into a new low over the Bering
that will track eastward bringing the next batch of organized
unsettled conditions to the region.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...
At the onset of the forecast period, there is an enhanced pressure
gradient over the Central Aleutians on the backside of the low. As
time elapses expect the gradient to slacken. Meanwhile, high
pressure continues to build over the western Bering. The models
bring a new storm into the domain from the south. However with
ridging in place north of the Aleutians, expect an element of
blocking and the steering flow will meagerly allow this system to
take a glancing blow to the Aleutians later in the forecast
period.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...
Beginning the extended period forecast Monday night, there will
be two mobile shortwave troughs moving in northwest flow, one
diving into the Gulf of Alaska and another moving off Eastern
Siberia. There will be a cutoff low in the North Pacific south of
the Western Aleutians with weak high pressure over the southern
Bering Sea. The low moving into the Gulf of Alaska will have
enough moisture and difluent upper level flow for areas of light
rain and showers over most of Southcentral and the Alaska Range.
Eventually, the Gulf low will quickly move southeast Tuesday, with
offshore flow drying out most of Southern Alaska.

By Wednesday, the aforementioned mobile shortwave moving east from
Eastern Siberia will begin moving onshore along the western Alaska
coast. Much uncertainty develops by this point, but it seems the
brief quiet weather pattern will briefly shift back to wetter and
more active as a North Pacific front moves north and merges with
the northern stream low. This should bring in a more southwest
flow regime late Wednesday night into Thursday with increasing
chances of rain as the trough digs and strengthens over Southern
Alaska. Eventually this progressive flow pattern is expected to
amplify by the end of the week as a ridge builds over the Western
Bering Sea. This will keep cooler temperatures and light shower
threats across Southern Alaska.
