Forecast challenges include timing, location and amounts of snow on
Sunday/Sunday night.
Currently, under a mostly cloudy sky and light easterly winds,
temperatures are warming through the teens and 20s. Surface obs and
regional radar shows a couple pockets of flurry/very light snow
activity continuing to decrease in coverage this afternoon.
Turning attention to the next system over the Pacific Northwest,
pretty much all the ensembles and deterministic guidance is
beginning to point toward several counties in northeast South Dakota
lining up underneath the best waa forcing/lift/instability regime
and what eventually becomes the deformation zone/trowal-forced snow
(in a system-relative sense) on Sunday. Similar to yesterday, spec
humidity values generally range from 2-4g/kg when the most
significant banded snow is developing/falling over the eastern
forecast zones. Snow looks to get started shortly before the Sunday
day period across portions of western and central South Dakota
before working over into the northeast part of the state and west
central Minnesota. Similar to the set up from this past system,
there will be some low level dry air to overcome (saturate down the
atmosphere) initially, and figuring out just where this strongest
(meso-scale in size) band of snow will set up shop and for how long,
makes this an excellent case for leaving the Winter Storm Watch in
place a little bit longer than would normal, in order to gather a
little bit more meso-scale refinement and detail from the hi-res CAM
solutions for heavy banded snow/qpf placement. It still looks like a
general 2 to 5 inches of snow can be expected from this storm
system, with an embedded smaller heavy snowband footprint of
potentially 5 to 9 inches. The breezy to windy easterly upslope
component wind on Sunday will also cause the prairie coteau higher
terrain feature of northeast South Dakota to enter the mix as
another reason for potentially higher snowfall amounts across the
far northeast part of the state on Sunday. This system should be
diminishing in snow coverage/intensity over this cwa by late Sunday
evening. The combination of breezy/windy easterly winds and falling
and blowing snow on Sunday could create considerable reductions in
visibility for some areas, creating rather hazardous traveling
conditions. Temperatures on Sunday do warm up some as low/mid level
waa ramps up with this low pressure system moving through. But then,
behind the system Sunday night, winds are forecast to switch around
to the north and drop temperatures back down into the well below
climo normal range.

The medium range models are again in very good agreement for the
extended period. After the storm system exists Monday and Monday
night, a warming trend will develop across the northern plains.
Coldest temps will be Monday with highs in the teens and lower 20s.
This will gradually warm into the mid 40s to lower 50s by Saturday
as a flat ridge moves into the area with strong zonal flow allowing
for warmer air to push across the northern CONUS.
The models are in pretty good agreement with bringing another strong
wave Thursday night into Friday. System looks to be mostly rain at
this time, with some snow mixed in overnight. But as with these
systems in zonal flow, it will be a fast mover and a relatively
short event.
