Currently watching a swath of high and mid clouds stream across
the southwest three quarters of the CWA. This area of clouds is
hindering radiation and temperatures have been slow to drop,
especially across the Pierre area. Did raise overnight low temps
a few degrees in this region, since it doesn't look like they will
be clearing out anytime soon. Skies are clear across the far
northeast however, and temperatures are dropping quickly. Wind
chill values are hovering in the -20 to -25 range, so just
flirting with wind chill advisory criteria. Current wind chill
warning headline takes effect at 6Z so timing looks on track to
capture the extreme wind chill values tonight. Models are still
hinting at some lake effect type pops/visibilities along the
Missouri River tonight, kept that mention in for now. Updates are
out.

.SHORT TERM...(This Evening through Saturday)
Issued at 322 PM CST Fri Dec 29 2017

Very cold Arctic high pressure centered over Saskatchewan and
Manitoba this afternoon will sink across much of ND and far
northeastern SD by mid morning, while extending a ridge over the
rest of the forecast area. The western areas of the forecast area,
west of the Missouri River, will have a couple of other issues to
deal with. Increased wind for tonight, with 10-15kts common
overnight with the strongest winds over our eastern counties.
Another potential issue will be lake enhanced clouds/snow off of the
Missouri River. Forecast models continue to hint at a band of snow
over MBG most of the night and into Saturday morning. Increased pops
there, as well as introduced flurries.

Otherwise, will keep wind chill headlines as is for tonight. They do
go away Saturday afternoon, but expect extensions or swapping of
headlines from Warnings to Advisories back to Warnings. Given that
we go back down to Advisory levels for 5-18 hours over the northern
tier counties, did not want to just extend the Wind Chill Warning
out another day or 2 for the northern tier.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday Night through Friday)
Issued at 322 PM CST Fri Dec 29 2017

The long term period begins with a weak system passing through the
region. This system will bring light, accumulating snow to central
and south central South Dakota. Snowfall amounts around an inch will
be possible. An Arctic high pressure will build into the region for
Sunday and Monday with bitter cold temperatures expected. Low
temperatures in the teens below to 25 degrees below zero Sunday
night will combine with a light northwesterly wind to produce wind
chills of 30 below to 40 degrees below zero. Weak warm air
advection will develop on Tuesday with high temperatures likely
warming to the single digits on either side of zero.

Breezy westerly winds on Wednesday will bring warmer temps into the
area with highs reaching the teens and 20s. The warmth will not last
long as cold front will sweep through the region Tuesday night with
highs dropping back into the single digits and low teens above zero
for Wednesday.

While highs in the teens and 20s are in the forecast for Friday,
both the GFS and Canadian show an Arctic high pressure over the
region with much colder temperatures. The ECMWF shows a much weaker
high pressure with warmer temperatures possible. With extreme
difference between these three models, along with a large spread
among the GEFS plumes, there is a low forecast confidence for
temperatures at the end of next week.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Saturday Night)

VFR conditions are anticipated in the first 6 hours of the TAF
period. However, a band of snowfall is expected to spread from
west to east across the region mainly between the 12Z-00Z time
frame. Expect CIG/VSBY reduction to the MVFR/IFR categories under
periods of light to moderate snowfall. Conditions will gradually
improve after 00Z. North northwest winds will also gradually
shift to more of an east northeast direction through the day
Saturday.
