...WINDY CONDITIONS TO RETURN TO NEW MEXICO THROUGH MONDAY...

.An upper level trough approaching New Mexico from the Great
Basin will slide overhead tonight and generate more strong winds 
through Monday. The first round of wind will impact primarily the 
high terrain through tonight. A cold front will race across New 
Mexico Monday and generate the second round of stronger wind in 
the high terrain and the eastern plains. Strong crosswinds will 
create hazardous travel conditions Monday with areas of blowing 
dust possible.

effect until 6 PM MST this evening. The High Wind Watch is no
longer in effect. 

* LOCATION...Interstate 25 corridor from Las Vegas to Raton.

* WINDS...Southwest 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph through
  late this afternoon. West 30 to 45 mph with gusts up to 60 mph
  Monday.

* TIMING...The strongest winds will occur late Monday morning  
  through Monday afternoon.

* VISIBILITY...Locally reduced in areas of blowing dust.

* LOCAL IMPACTS...Strong crosswinds will impact north to south

VFR cond will prevail today with increasing high clouds. Anticipate
breezy to windy cond this aftn with gusts between 35-40kts at KGUP,
KLVS, and KTCC. Winds will taper down some across lower elevations
tonight but will continue blowing across the Chuskas and Sangre De
Cristos overnight. Look for winds to ramp up to advisory/high wind
criteria Monday along and east of the central mtn chain...with
stronger winds favoring the NE/EC Plains and SC Mtns.

.PREV DISCUSSION...239 AM MST Sun Mar 5 2017...
.SYNOPSIS...
Mid and high clouds will stream in from the west today. Breezy
southwest winds will develop across much of the region as an upper
level storm system approaches from the west. A few showers are
expected across western and northwestern New Mexico this afternoon
through Monday. Strong winds are also likely across the higher
terrain tonight into Monday morning. As the storm moves east into
Utah on tonight, the associated cold front will usher in cooler air
into the state Monday. A few snow showers will accompany the frontal
passage across northern New Mexico Monday. Improving conditions are
on tap for Tuesday through at least Thursday.

.DISCUSSION...
Lots of mid and high clouds poised over southern CA and AZ will move
through NM today. Shaved a degree or two off of the best performing
temperature guidance given the extensive cloud cover. Associated
southwesterly jet ahead of an upper level trough over northern and
central CA will result in increasing southwest winds. Cloud cover
will likely keep winds below advisory criteria most places. A few
spots like Las Vegas may briefly hit wind advisory speeds. A strong
southwesterly jet moves overhead tonight, likely resulting in strong
winds for the higher terrain. Models catching on to a mid- level
Pacific moisture tap for this afternoon through Monday. Increased
precipitation chances somewhat for mainly the higher elevations of
the west and north this afternoon through Monday as a result of this
moisture and incoming 100kt jet. A few inches of snow accumulation is
likely in the Tusas mountains east of Chama and Tierra Amarilla,
primarily behind the passage of the associated surface cold front
tonight. Cold front moves southeastward through the northwest half
of the state by sunrise Monday, then through the remainder of the
state by noon or so. Temperatures will remain steady or cool through
the afternoon.

Upper trough slides east of the area Tuesday with a dry west to
northwest flow aloft moving in. Cool air continues to filter in from
the northwest Tuesday with temperatures climbing to above average
levels by Wednesday. GFS and to a lesser extent the ECMWF and
Canadian bring up low level moisture into the lower RGV of TX
Wednesday night. GFS developing some QPF/precip across the southeast
third of the state Wednesday night. Sided more in line with the ECMWF
and Canadian models given the brisk west winds aloft in all the
models likely shunting the moisture east of the CWA.

A mainly dry zonal flow aloft is forecast by all global models
during the latter half of the work week. Models now at odds as to
whether or not an upper level trough will be far enough south to
result in more than an increase in wind for next weekend.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Critical fire weather conditions are still on track today for much
of eastern New Mexico as the westerlies increase ahead of a potent
trough progressing east across the Great Basin and southern
California, but a thickening cloud layer in the mid/upper levels of
the atmosphere will likely limit potential fire behavior. More
critical fire weather condtions forecast Monday across eastern New
Mexico as strong winds associated with the upper level trough move
overhead. The setup for Monday looks more ominous than today's given
only fair humidity recovery, stronger winds forecast and less cloud
cover.

A cold front will race east across the area Monday as the upper

trend down Tuesday as the cooler airmass settles in behind the front
and winds relax, with a mix of fair/poor rates forecast across
central and western portions of the area. A new warming trend will
begin Wednesday and continue through the end of the work week, with
daytime temperatures trending back above normal by Thursday.

The jet stream will take a southerly dip across the Great Basin and
Southern Rockies next weekend, with increasing westerly flow across
New Mexico and a deepening lee side trough spelling the potential
return of critical fire weather conditions.
