.SYNOPSIS...
Dry and warm to very warm temperatures remain on track for today.
High temperatures ranging from 20 to 35 degrees above average for
the date are forecast this afternoon, breaking or shattering long
standing records, especially east of the central mountains. Winds
will increase markedly Saturday and temperatures will remain well
above average levels with more records likely east. A major change in
the weather remains on track for Sunday as a strong backdoor cold
front plows through the state. A potent upper low gets into the mix
Sunday night through Monday night, brining widespread rain and snow
to the area.

.DISCUSSION...
Quasi-zonal flow aloft resulting in westerly breezes across eastern
NM this morning. These breezes are keeping temperatures in the 50s
and setting the stage for a record warm day. Temperatures across
central and northern NM will range from 20 to 35 degrees above
average for the date. High temperatures will likely be shattered
across the eastern plains where high temperatures at Tucumcari and
Roswell will flirt with 90F. Temperatures will modify somewhat
across western and central NM Saturday as mid and high clouds
increase and heights fall but remain near Friday's readings across
the east.

00z model suite is somewhat perplexing with the GFS now keeping the
track well south of the Mexican border as it tracks east Sunday night
into Monday night. GFS solution would keep the low center a bit too
far south for major impacts for all but the east and southeast
plains. Trended the forecast, however, toward the more run to run
consistent ECMWF solution which keeps the low center tracking east
along the southern NM border Monday and Monday night. Additionally, 06Z
NAM brings the closed low on a track very similar to the ECMWF. Main
change in the forecast was to slow the timing of the precipitation
across the far northwest to Saturday night and delay the higher
precip chances to Sunday night through Monday night as opposed to
Sunday and Monday. Will forgo a winter storm watch for now and issue
a special weather statement given the continued uncertainty with
regard to track. Potent backdoor cold front plows swwd across eastern
NM Saturday night and then wwd into central and western NM Sunday
morning. Strong east canyon winds into the RGV still looking very
likely for Sunday morning. Latest models suggesting a solid wind
advisory type east wind event with no spill over (ely winds near mtn
top level) expected and the strongest sfc pressure gradient setting
up across western NM Sunday afternoon. Snow levels east of the
central mountain chain will drop to near 3500 feet Sunday while snow
levels west fall to between 5000 and 6000 feet across central and
western NM Sunday night. Favored area for the heaviest snow
accumulation is across central and southern areas above 6k ft and
along/east of the central mountain chain where the ely upslope flow
will enhance upglide snow. Wrap-around snow is forecast to continue
across central and eastern NM Monday night and perhaps into Tuesday
morning before the low finally lifts out.

Warming trend gets underway Wednesday with a high amplitude ridge
building over the intermountain west. Ridge folds over late in the
week as a very strong Aleutian low loads up a wave train aimed at CA
and the southwest U.S. next weekend and beyond.

.FIRE WEATHER...
A warm, dry and unstable day is on tap for much of New Mexico, with
the most unstable conditions across the Northeast Plains where
critical fire weather conditions are forecast by afternoon.
Temperatures will be well above normal today, with new record highs
forecast across much of central and eastern portions of the area.
Will upgrade the watch to a warning for the Northeast Plains today
with winds still the only limiter, although with deep layer mixing
forecast will see some strong gusts. Today's drying will set the
stage for another red flag event Saturday across the Eastern Plains,
with mostly fair humidity recovery and a few pockets of poor. Both
the Northeast and East Central Plains look to be impacted Saturday,
but will leave as a watch for now.

Major trend reversal Saturday night through Sunday as a backdoor
cold front plows southwest across the state and an upper low
approaches from over Southern California. The 00z model solutions
show some differences in the track of the upper low beyond 12z
Sunday, with the further north and more consistent ECMWF favored
this forecast cycle. A solid wetting event looks on track from
Saturday night through Monday night, favoring the mountains, Eastern
Highlands and Eastern Plains. Vent rates trend down Sun/Mon and will
be poor to fair areawide.

A new warming/drying trend will begin Tuesday and continue through
the end of next week, with temperatures reaching above normal
areawide by Thursday. Ridging aloft behind the slowly departing
upper low will allow for poor/fair vent rates to continue into the
end of next week.

A Pacific storm system is forecast to combine with a strong backdoor
cold front, bringing widespread low elevation rain and mountain snow
to much of the region Sunday night through Monday night. Much colder
temperatures along with strong east and northeast winds will
accompany the front. Strong east canyon winds will develop in the Rio
Grande valley Sunday morning with gusts to 45 mph possible.
Improving conditions are anticipated Tuesday.
