[Through 12z Friday] Rain will gradually end across the area from
west to east during the period, although it may last for much of the
day around VLD. Ceilings will gradually improve as well with VFR
conditions expected to return to TLH this morning and VLD by late in
the period.

.Prev Discussion [341 AM EST]...

.Near Term [Through Today]...
Although the surface cold front has pushed through much of the area,
the large upper level trough continues to lag well to the west with
deep layer southwest flow aloft. One more upper level shortwave will
affect the eastern half of the area today, keeping fairly steady
rainfall in place. Fortunately, rainfall rates have diminished and
the risk of flash flooding has decreased considerably. However, with
the steady rainfall falling on already saturated grounds, there
still could be some instances of gradual flooding of flood prone
areas near small creeks and streams and along rural dirt roads
across the eastern half of the area. Widespread flooding is not
expected. Temperatures behind the front are expected to remain on
the cool side today with most areas seeing mid 50s for high
temperatures, except the far southeast big bend around Cross City
where mid 60s are expected.

.Short Term [Tonight Through Saturday]...
Drier and cooler conditions are expected through the short term
period. As the upper trough finally shifts the post frontal
moisture out into the Western Atlantic after midnight, moderate
cold advection will result in a cool night across the region.
With the surface ridge hanging back to the west across the Mid
South, don't expect temperatures to drop below the freezing mark,
except perhaps across Southeastern Alabama - and only then for
just an hour or two.

By Friday, high pressure will remain in control of the weather
across the South. Even with full sunshine, temperatures will only
warm into the mid to upper 50s.

Friday night, the high pressure area will move into the Southern
Appalachians as the next upper level disturbance approaches the
region. As this system quickly approaches, expect considerable
upper level cloudiness to overspread the area after midnight.
Moreover, surface winds are not likely to go calm, which will
limit radiational cooling. MOS guidance is suggesting a
widespread freeze across the region, despite these unfavorable
conditions. Given the pattern, will keep the forecast several
degrees above the MAV/MET MOS blend, closer to the previous
forecast.

Saturday, a surface low pressure system will begin to develop
across the Northern Gulf in response to an approaching upper level
low. Mostly cloudy conditions, especially over the eastern half of
the region will lead to another cool day with highs only in the
upper 50s to near 60.

.Long Term [Saturday Night Through Thursday]...
The first in a series of strong upper level systems will move east
of the region at the start of the period, generating a strong low
pressure system across the Western Atlantic by Sunday. The pattern
will significantly amplify by Monday as a dry cold front moves
across the Deep South Monday afternoon. As the large upper low
centers over the Ohio River Valley by Tuesday, a persistent
stretch of breezy and cool conditions will start and continue
through the end of the period. Model guidance is in fairly good
agreement that the southern periphery of the upper low will have
little if any moisture to work with, so will keep rain chances out
of the forecast. Have also undercut temperatures Tuesday-Thursday
several degrees given the strong cold advection expected through
Wednesday evening. Late in the period, a large high pressure area
will settle over the region, possibly setting the stage for some
of the coldest temperatures on Thursday morning of this winter
season.

.Marine...
Offshore winds will increase to advisory levels later today and
further increase overnight. High pressure will build near the
region on Friday evening, resulting in some decrease in offshore
winds through the weekend. Winds will increase to advisory levels
again on Monday.

.Fire Weather...
Although drier air will arrive on Friday, red flag conditions are
not expected for the next several days given the wet soil
conditions.

.Hydrology...
A large swath of 3 to 5 inches of rain occurred yesterday from the
Florida Panhandle through far Southeastern Alabama and into
Southwestern Georgia. Slightly lower amounts were common a little
further east from the Florida Big Bend up into South Central
Georgia. Given the widespread nature of the rainfall, rivers are
rising steadily across the region this morning. Additional
rainfall of 0.5 - 1 inch today is expected across mainly eastern
areas of the region.

At least minor flooding is expected throughout the lower
Choctawhatchee Basin in the coming days, with moderate flooding
possible this weekend at Bruce.

Routed flows down the Chattahoochee River (and anticipated
inflows from the Flint in the next 2-3 days) will result in
increased releases from Woodruff to at least 60kcfs later today,
sustaining the minor flood levels at Blountstown for the
foreseeable future.

Within the Flint basin, steady rises continue in the Kinchafoonee
and Muckalee Creeks. Expect the Kinchafoonee to reach minor flood
stage later today. Upstream rainfall above Lake Blackshear doesn't
appear to have been significant enough to result in downstream
flooding below Lake Blackshear through Newton. However, near the
bottom of the basin, Bainbridge may near flood stage early next
week.

The 2-4 inch rainfall totals in the Ochlockonee and Withlacoochee
River basins may finally result in the Georgia forecast points on
these rivers reaching flood stage for the first time this winter
season by the end of the week. Further downstream into Florida,
flooding is not expected.
