NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0111 PM CST WED FEB 24 2016
AREAS AFFECTED...PORTIONS OF MAINE AND NRN NH
CONCERNING...FREEZING RAIN
VALID 241911Z - 242315Z
SUMMARY...AREAS OF FREEZING RAIN WILL SPREAD ACROSS PORTIONS OF NRN
NEW ENGLAND THROUGH LATE THIS AFTERNOON.
DISCUSSION...THE ERN PERIPHERY OF A BROAD WARM-ADVECTION PLUME --
LOCATED WELL E OF A DEEP CYCLONE CROSSING PARTS OF THE OHIO
VALLEY -- IS SUPPORTING AREAS OF PRECIP ACROSS NEW ENGLAND. ONE AREA
OF PRECIP IS ADVANCING ENEWD ACROSS PARTS OF CNTRL/NRN MAINE...WITH
A MORE WIDESPREAD SHIELD OF PRECIP DEVELOPING NWD/NEWD FROM NY AND
SRN NEW ENGLAND. MEANWHILE...THE SFC-PRESSURE PATTERN IMPLIES
RESIDUAL COLD-AIR-DAMMING IN MANY LOCATIONS NEAR/E OF THE
APPALACHIANS WITHIN THE MCD AREA...ASSOCIATED WITH SUB-FREEZING SFC
TEMPERATURES ACROSS THE REGION. GIVEN ONLY MODEST LOW-LEVEL
MASS-FIELD ADJUSTMENTS -- OWING TO STRONGER FORCING FOR ASCENT
DISPLACED WELL TO THE W OF THE AREA -- SUB-FREEZING SFC TEMPERATURES
SHOULD CONTINUE THROUGH THE AFTERNOON. THE COLDEST READINGS WILL BE
LIKELY IN SHELTERED VALLEYS AND OTHER LOWER ELEVATIONS. FORECAST
SOUNDINGS SUGGEST THAT AN ELEVATED WARM LAYER WILL CONTINUE TO
FOSTER MELTING OF DESCENDING HYDROMETEORS THAT WILL FREEZE ON
CONTACT WITH THE SFC LAYER AS FREEZING RAIN. FREEZING-RAIN RATES OF
0.02 TO LOCALLY 0.05 INCH PER HOUR WILL BE POSSIBLE AS PRECIP
ADVANCES ACROSS THE REGION THROUGH LATE AFTERNOON.
