MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1113
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1154 AM CDT SAT JUL 02 2016

AREAS AFFECTED...NC...SOUTHWEST VA

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY

VALID 021654Z - 021900Z

PROBABILITY OF WATCH ISSUANCE...20 PERCENT

SUMMARY...A RISK FOR MARGINALLY SEVERE AND LOCALLY DAMAGING WINDS
SHOULD DEVELOP AS WIDELY SCATTERED STORMS FORM ACROSS THE COASTAL
PLAIN OF SOUTHEAST NC AND FARTHER NORTHWEST ALONG THE LEE OF THE
APPALACHIANS NEAR THE NC/VA BORDER.

DISCUSSION...SMALL CBS /SHOWERS/ HAVE COMMENCED ALONG THE LEE TROUGH
NEAR THE NORTHWEST NC/SOUTHWEST VA BORDER REGION AND OVER THE
COASTAL PLAIN OF SOUTHEAST NC NEAR A WEAK QUASI-STATIONARY FRONT.
THE AIR MASS IS WARMEST/MORE UNSTABLE ALONG AND SOUTH OF THIS
BOUNDARY...WITH A NORTH-SOUTH GRADIENT IN MODERATE MID-LEVEL
WESTERLIES OVER THE REGION. WHILE MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES WERE POOR IN
12Z AREA RAOBS...THE ROBUST DIABATIC HEATING AMID RICH
BOUNDARY-LAYER MOISTURE SHOULD BE SUFFICIENT FOR THIN BUT MODERATE
BUOYANCY SOUTH AND WEAK BUOYANCY NORTH. THIS SETUP MAY YIELD
MARGINALLY SEVERE HAIL IN THE STRONGEST UPDRAFTS AND EVENTUALLY
MODEST CLUSTERING /PERHAPS FOCUSED ALONG THE FRONT IN SOUTHEAST NC/
WITH A RISK FOR ISOLATED DAMAGING WINDS.
