Heavy rainfall tonight and Thursday will force the Skokomish
river in Mason county into flood stage. Three to 4 inches of rain
is forecast in the Skokomish river basin through this period.
Additional heavy rain will keep the river running high, possibly
over flood stage, through this weekend.

.SYNOPSIS...A warm front will spread rain into Western Washington
tonight and Thursday. Surface low pressure lifting north off the
Washington coast Thursday night will bring strong winds to the coast
and interior lowlands. Weak low pressure will move through the area
Friday, keeping wet weather in the forecast. A powerful storm
system, the remnants of a Pacific typhoon, will arrive this weekend
with the potential for damaging winds and flooding. Wet weather will
continue early next week.

.SHORT TERM...The first in a series of powerful storms will impact
Western Washington tonight. The main concern will be heavy rain,
especially in the Olympics. KLGX is showing rain spreading to the
coast from a strong and wet warm front. Precipitation intensity
will increase early Thursday morning and will likely see sharp
rises on the Skokomish river in Mason county - a Flood Watch is in
effect. Expect rain elsewhere through the day.
Next up is a double-barrel low that will form a 970-980 mb
surface low off the WA coast. This system will bring high wind to
the coast Thursday afternoon...with south winds increasing in the
interior Thursday night as this system moves inland (into southern
B.C.). This will be the first strong blow for much of the region.
There was high wind last weekend but mainly the coast and north
interior. But this time the Puget Sound area will also see a burst
of wind. High Wind Warnings are in effect. Meanwhile, rain will
continue and will be heavy at times in the mountains. This causes
more hydrology concerns and the reason for the Flood Watches.
Friday is a showery and blustery day. Models still show heavy rain
in the mountains and will likely still see hydrology issues.
The focus then shifts to Saturday and Saturday night. Looking
upstream...typhoon Songda, still west of the dateline, is
transitioning to an extra-tropical cyclone. This system will then
track 3000 mi east toward the Pac NW...bringing very high wind
with seas over 30 feet. The new 00z run of the GFS tracks a 956
mb low off the WA coast, then filling to 963 mb as it moves into
central Vancouver Island late Sat night. The UW WRF looks similar
at a quick glance. The previous 12z ECMWF shows a southern track
with a 972 mb low moving into the mouth of the Columbia Sat
evening. The new Nam tracking is in between...but still a
powerful storm. Lots of uncertainty at this point, but we'll see
how the models line up as we get closer in time. 33
Coastal flooding...The powerful storm on Saturday and Saturday
night will generate a large southwest swell that bring very high
surf along the WA coast, likely reaching 30 feet. The large surf
will begin rising late Saturday afternoon then peak late Saturday
evening, before beginning to subside Sunday morning. There will be
a high tide along the coast a little after midnight Saturday night
when the largest swell may be reaching the coast. The high tide
will not be exceptionally high but the waves will be large enough
to easily sweep up beaches and over-top jetties. Beach erosion and
some coastal flooding is likely. Kam
.LONG TERM...Previous discussion...Conditions will calm down a
bit by Sunday as the strong low shifts northeast of the region.
Models still show a moist westerly flow pattern across the Pacific
so additional weather systems may are possible next week. The GFS
brings a system to the south of the area on Monday but this could
easily shift closer to the area. It will at least be unsettled and
cool with some showers around unless a more organized system
brings rain to the area. Mercer

.HYDROLOGY...The first storm system will produce heavy rain at
times tonight through Thursday night. 1 to 2 inches are expected
in the lowlands to 2 to 4 inches in the mountains, except locally
5 to 7 inches along south facing slopes of the Olympics and the
volcanos. Flooding is likely on the Skokomish river with a watch
still in effect for Mason county. Other rivers running off the
Cascades are also at risk, especially in Whatcom and Snohomish
counties. Additional flood watches may be need to be issued once
all the hydro data arrives.
Another stronger storm will affect the region this weekend with more
heavy rain likely. Similar or even higher rain totals are possible.
The added flood potential will need to be addressed with an extended
flood outlook later today. dtm

.AVIATION...A Pacific frontal system will continue to move inland
tonight. Rain is slow to progress eastward...but as of this writing
radar shows echoes over much of the Olympic Peninsula and if trends
remain consistent...will likely see terminals east of Puget Sound
impacted by 06Z tonight. With the onset of this rain...expect cigs
to fall from VFR to MVFR for tonight and into Thursday.
KSEA...VFR conditions this evening...giving way to MVFR late
tonight...after 10Z. Rain expected to move in by 06Z. Surface winds
variable around 5 knots before turning SE 4-8 KT between 05-07Z.

.MARINE...A Pacific frontal system is just reaching the coast and
adjacent waters at the time of this writing...and is expected to
dissipate early Thursday morning. This system is expected to raise
SE gales over the coastal waters and the north interior...and
current obs show winds are trending upwards...though have not met
criteria yet. With the current trend...inherited headlines look good
for the time being and will save any updates from morning forecast
products. A 971 MB low will sweep NE across the coastal waters late
Thursday afternoon and night, making landfall on the central
Vancouver Island coast late Thursday night. This storm will be
stronger than the first front with stronger and more widespread
gales expected.
A powerful 950 MB storm, packing the remnants of Typhoon Songda,
will sweep NE offshore Saturday, making landfall near northern
Vancouver Island late Saturday night. This storm will likely
generate storm force winds over the coastal waters with a chance
that gusts could reach hurricane force. Combined seas over the
coastal waters may reach 27 to 37 feet. Kam/SMR
