Canadian high pressure will extend across central NC through the weekend. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... As of 1055 AM Friday... 12Z upper air analysis depicts low level cold air advection in progress across central NC, a result of a passage of a surface cold front earlier this morning. 850mb temps upstream are 5-10 degrees C cooler. Thus, expect cooler afternoon temps compared to Thursday with high temps ranging from near 70 north to the low-mid 70s south. A strong subsidence inversion depicted on the 12Z GSO sounding will trap a shallow layer of moisture between 3000-5000ft, resulting in pockets of stratocu, mainly west of highway 1 and especially in proximity of the nw Piedmont. -wss Tonight: cP surface ridging will favor strong radiational cooling conditions, though model guidance suggests stratocumulus will become BKN to OVC over the WRN Piedmont, which will favor warmest lows around 50 degrees or so there, ranging to lower-middle 40s to the E where stratocumulus will be less. -mws && .SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/... As of 345 AM Friday... A shortwave over the southern Plains this morning will undergo mild amplification over the next 24 hours before drifting over the Southeast US and then eventually settling south over Florida. With a 1030mb high extending down the East Coast and limited moisture (PW ~1 inch of less), the main impact will be enhanced cloud cover, especially over western NC where high clouds are likely to be thicker. Thicknesses (~1360m), accounting for some in the west, suggest highs in the mid 60s to around 70. Models indicate clearing on Saturday night, though with moist east-northeasterly 925mb flow and some potential for stratus in the coastal plain. Lows 47-53. && .LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... As of 345 AM Friday... With perpetual troughing over the western US continuing into early next week, a mid and upper level ridge is forecast to build over the Southeast Sunday through Wednesday. Thicknesses peak around 1400m on Wednesday, which supports highs rebounding into the upper 70s/lower 80s by Monday and the low/mid 80s by midweek, and GEFS and EC EPS temp anomalies support highs ~10 degrees above normal. There is high confidence in dry weather the first half of the week. The bigger story could end up being an upper low that is forecast to cut off over the Deep South or Southeast US late next week. The GFS and EC differ on where this low eventually stalls, but the pattern can be notorious for periods of heavy rain in the southern Appalachians and eastward, though the GEFS and EC EPS currently don't show a strong signal for heavy rain in one particular area. However, given the ongoing flooding over eastern NC, this pattern could be troublesome. && .AVIATION /12Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... As of 740 AM Friday... Mainly VFR, in association with Canadian high pressure that will build south across NC through tonight, in the wake of an earlier frontal passage. In addition, SCT to BKN stratocumulus will percolate beneath a subsidence inversion behind the front, with associated cloud bases between 3500-6000 feet. Surface winds around the incoming surface ridge will be from the NE mainly between 5-10 kt, though slightly stronger with occasional gustiness into the teens kts through midday. Outlook: SELY flow atop the aforementioned surface ridge, and associated "overrunning", may result in a period of 2500-3500 ceilings at INT and GSO late tonight and early Sat, and also at RWI Sat afternoon and evening. A chance of light fog (mainly MVFR) and low stratus (LIFR-IFR) will follow late Sat night-Sun morning, especially at RWI. && .HYDROLOGY... As of 1055 AM Friday...
