Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Milwaukee/Sullivan WI 311 AM CDT THU SEP 8 2016 .TODAY AND TONIGHT - Confidence...High The main focus for today is on cloud cover and temperatures after a cold front swings through later this morning/early afternoon. As of 3am, a surface low was centered over southwest Ontario with a cold front extending south through eastern Minnesota. A ridge of high pressure is off to the west of this front in the Dakotas and will propagate eastward today following the front. Have been keeping an eye on visibilities across central Wisconsin, but they haven't dropped much yet. RAP soundings show some decent winds just off of the surface at the inversion level, so it seems that this should be enough to keep the layer mixed enough and promote stratus as opposed to fog. However, will continue to monitor conditions in that region for any potential fog. As the front approaches, it will end up acting more like a dry line than a cold front as surface temperatures should bounce back nicely with 850mb temperatures increasing and skies clearing through the day. Surface dew points will drop into the low 60s by late afternoon after starting around 70F this morning. IR satellite shows quite a bit of cloud cover ahead of the front in Wisconsin right now which likely will not improve much until the front approaches. Otherwise, will be keeping an eye on convection chances going toward daybreak Friday ahead of the next system. .FRIDAY AND FRIDAY NIGHT - Confidence...Medium 500 millibar flow will be southwest ahead of the next upstream trough. Models show various strengths to some lead vorts riding northeast ahead of the primary forcing mechanism. A leading 850 jetlet rides to our south through ern IL into lwr MI. So shra/tsra will likely be focused more to our south with that. A surface/850 trough will gradually be advancing into WI as the day wears on and combined with some upper level jet dynamics will have POPS gradually expanding across srn WI. The 00z GFS is a bit quicker with moving precip in than the 12z ECMWF. ECMWF MLCAPE comes up short of 1000 j/kg and this seems reasonable at the moment due to the abundance of clouds in place per MOS and LLVL RH progs. Best jet dynamics arrive Friday night in association with the arrival of the 500 millibar trough and right rear quadrant of upper level jet lifting northeast ahead of the trough. Surface cyclogenesis gets going once trough passes to our so cold advection increases as pressure gradient tightens up. Will carry fairly high POPS this period especially Friday afternoon into the overnight. .SATURDAY - Confidence...Medium Main story will be the much cooler/less humid airmass in the wake of the departed front. Shortwave trough will still be exiting to the east in the morning so the models are still keying on potential for at least some lingering shra in the morning especially in the eastern CWA. Low level thermal trough will be setting up. 850temps drop to 8c and 925 temps will be tumbling to the teens celsius. So some areas may struggle to get out of the 60s. .SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY - Confidence...Medium This looks to be a tranquil period as surface/850 ridging dominate. By Sunday the high will be off to the east and we will start seeing a return southerly wind set up. Better warming remains to our west though with only subtle modification noted in the progs with respect to the 850/925 thermal pattern. Further warming occurs Monday ahead of the next trough. At this time will have only a small POP in our west Monday to account for the faster GFS solution. Even though the GFS has a quicker frontal passage they still show a prefrontal bump in temps for Monday, but the ECMWF shows a more established thermal ridge due to the front hanging back to the west all day. .MONDAY NIGHT AND TUESDAY - Confidence...Low The GFS continues to be much faster on the progression of the front and the precip tied to this boundary. The GFS shows bulk of any shra would come Monday night while the ECMWF suggests frontal precip on Tuesday. Will stick with the Superblend guid at this point. .WEDNESDAY - Confidence...Medium While timing differences persist the frontal placement on either model is to our south so expect the influence of surface/850 ridging to be in place. So per collab with LOT, lowered Superblend guidance to go with the dry look. A rather cool airmass takes hold with 925 temps down to near 10c-13c, so expect more 60s for highs. && .AVIATION/12Z TAFS/...Low clouds and some fog developed overnight due to the high amount of ground moisture from yesterday's rains and light winds. Ceilings have been the bigger issue with them ranging from 500ft overcast to clear at times. With the air mass not changing until later today, think that these low cigs will hold on for a period this morning before improving. A ridge of high pressure will then move through today before a warm front lifts up into the region late tonight into early Friday morning. Some storms will be possible at MSN Friday morning, but chances are fairly low at this point. && .MARINE...Winds will generally stay on the light side today into Friday as a ridge of high pressure moves through the region. Winds will become stronger on Saturday as a more potent low pressure system moves through the western Great Lakes.
