.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Sunday)
Issued at 335 PM CDT Sat Sep 3 2016

Showers and thunderstorms are beginning to initiate across the
western Nebraska panhandle at this time. Thunderstorms are
expected to develop and move across the eastern Panhandle through
the remainder of the afternoon and into early evening and slowly
migrate into southwestern/southern Nebraska by late evening. At
this time northern and eastern portions of the forecast area are
expected to miss out on the thunderstorms. With plenty of
instability across the southwest portion of Nebraska, SPC has
recently put out a slight risk for this area. Severe storms will
definitely be possible as the evening progresses with large hail
and strong winds being the main concern. Showers diminish by early
morning with low temperatures dropping into the mid-60s.

Thunderstorm chances return on Sunday as a frontal system moves
across the northern plains. With most of the forecast area under
a slight risk on Sunday, severe storms are anticipated once again.
Best chances for thunderstorms will be after 18Z (1pm) as the
front slides across the region and surface heating reaches a
maximum. High temperatures on Sunday will rise into the upper 80s,
with locations mainly south of I-80 rising into the low 90s. One
limiting factor that could play a part on thunderstorm development
could be the cloud cover that is expected through much of Sunday.
If clouds stick around longer or are thicker than expected, the
lack of significant diurnal heating could inhibit thunderstorm
development or at least slow down the development of stronger or
severe storms.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Saturday)
Issued at 335 PM CDT Sat Sep 3 2016

Sunday Night through Tuesday: Western and north central NE will be
under southwest flow aloft through the period. An amplified long
wave trough is positioned across the western CONUS while a ridge
is downstream over the Lower Mississippi Valley into the Lower
Great Lakes at the start of the period. The large scale pattern
aloft doesn't change too much during the period, over 48 hours,
though the upper trough will slowly moving east and the ridge will
build more over the Ohio and Tennessee valleys.

Rain showers and thunderstorms are expected to have developed and
be underway across portions of the forecast area at the start of
the period. A 500 hPa short wave trough within the southwesterly
flow moving from southern CO to south central SD Sunday will
help provide large scale ascent and steepen lapse rates,
especially mid-levels, across the forecast area. An inverted
surface trough will become positioned across NE CO-western NE-
south central SD at the start of the period, having deepened
during the day, and a dry line is expected to extend southward
from the trough through southwest NE as well. Wherein enhanced
convergence is expected and will help provide focus for
development, however, there is still some uncertainty in location
of these features and the evolution of the dry line based on
latest deterministic guidance with the NAM and GFS. The former
seems to better depict the dry line and its evolution as it mixes
east. Strong-severe thunderstorms are possible with large winds
and hail the primary threats. 0-6 km bulk shear of 35-40 kts
across portions of the area suggest multicells and some supercells
possible with respect to storm mode. SPC Day 2 Outlook has much of
the CWA in a SLGT risk area, this appears appropriate given the
overall severe weather parameter space and forcing.

Monday, risk of strong to severe storms will again be possible,
with the best chances across the eastern-third of the forecast
area. The aforementioned surface trough will move eastward with
its axis is expected to be over the southeast-third of the
forecast area extending from a lee side low in northeast CO. SPC
Day 3 Outlook has a portion of the forecast area, the northeast
quad, in a SLGT risk area with a marginal risk area present across
roughly the eastern-third of the forecast area. Sufficient
instability and surface convergence with the trough will provide
another opportunity for rain showers and thunderstorms though it
appears large scale forcing/ascent will not be as strong Monday
compared to Sunday. Another weak disturbance Tuesday will bring
increased chances for precipitation to portions of the forecast
area, mainly over north central NE and the extreme western portion
of the forecast area. Wherein, a trough and cold front will now be
near the extreme southern portion of the forecast area.

Monday should be unseasonable warm for much of the southern half
of the forecast area with seasonal normal values now in the lower
80s. Wherein, highs in the lower 90s are expected along and south
of Interstate 80, about 9-12 degrees above normal. Highs
elsewhere will be in the 80s. Above normal low temperatures are
expected Sunday Night and Monday Night with mid 50s-mid 60s and
lower 50s-mid 60s, respectively. Cooler high temperatures will
follow on Tuesday as cooler air pushes into the rest of the area
behind a cold front pushing southward Monday Night.

Tuesday Night through Saturday: Looking beyond Tuesday, high
temperatures will approach seasonal values with near normal
temperatures expected Thursday through Saturday. Highs Wednesday
will be mild with low to mid 80s expected. Deterministic guidance
have a decent amount of QPF forecast north of a surface
trough/front west to east across western and north central NE
Tuesday night as a disturbance aloft moves through in the
southwest flow. There is some uncertainty in the large scale
pattern with this and, while details are difficult to figure out
at this time, it's worth noting given the forecast location of
low-level frontal boundary, sufficient available moisture
(precipitable water ~1.25-1.75 inches west to east across north
central NE progged by 12Z GFS), and instability. Otherwise, there
are opportunities for slight chance-chance PoPs, mainly outside of
western NE, Wednesday and Thursday Night-Friday Night.

Showers and thunderstorms will develop across the western and
southwestern forecast area this evening, but should remain
isolated in coverage. Any storms should remain outside the KLBF
vicinity and have no mention attm. will monitor colsely however.
Storms should remain south of KVTN and the only real impact will
be increasing clouds. Ceilings at both sites drop off below 2500
feet by 09Z- 10Z, with KLBF even dropping below 1000 feet by 14Z.
Increasing winds are expected at both terminals by mid Sunday
morning.

AND EVENING OVER ALL WESTERN NEBRASKA. LOCATION FOR STRONGEST
STORMS WILL BE ACROSS THE SOUTHEASTERN NEBRASKA PANHANDLE AND
SOUTHWESTERN NEBRASKA. THE MAIN THREAT WILL BE LARGE HAIL AND
STRONG WINDS.

THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS OVER WESTERN
NEBRASKA SUNDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING AS A SURFACE LOW PRESSURE
MOVES ACROSS THE DAKOTAS. LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS WILL BE
POSSIBLE EAST OF HIGHWAY 61 OR EAST OF A MERRIMAN TO IMPERIAL
LINE.

THE SEVERE RISK WILL SHIFT EAST INTO NORTH CENTRAL NEBRASKA
MONDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING AS A COLD FRONT MOVES THROUGH. THE
