Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Lincoln IL 634 PM CDT SAT AUG 13 2016 .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Sunday) ISSUED AT 300 PM CDT Sat Aug 13 2016 Main focus remains with the convective trends over the southeast CWA. Strong tropical plume continues to be driven northward from the low over Louisiana. Surface front was analyzed this afternoon roughly from near Terre Haute to south central Missouri, and is becoming parallel to the upper flow. As a result, only a slow drift southward is expected through Sunday. HRRR has a good handle on the convection that developed over the areas south of I-70 around midday, and keeps most of the showers/storms going through about sunset. Other high-resolution guidance supports a break down there this evening, before showers/storms start pushing northward again after midnight and focus in the same general area through Sunday. Further north, fairly quiet weather expected over central Illinois. Back edge of the clouds is advancing past east past the Illinois River this afternoon, and the clearing should reach about as far east as Champaign and Taylorville by late evening before the clouds start to surge back northwest into these areas. The return of these lower clouds should make it back to about I-55 by sunrise, so only areas northwest of the Illinois River should see a decent amount of sunshine on Sunday. Highs tomorrow will mainly be in the lower 80s outside of the rainy areas, with upper 70s south of I-70 where the rain will be more prevalent. .LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Saturday) ISSUED AT 300 PM CDT Sat Aug 13 2016 Though the frontal boundary will be south of the CWA, another wave will begin lifting out of the southern Plains area. As this does, the boundary will lift northward some. Strong lift is expected along and north of this boundary Sunday night, which will produce another round of heavy thunderstorms over southern IL beginning Sunday night and continuing into Monday. High PW values will once again lead to heavy rainfall over this area, with the heavy rainfall axis being south of I-70 through the period. Amounts of 1 inch to 1.5 inches will be likely in southeast IL. However, locally higher amounts will be likely given the abundance of low level moisture and the possibility of storms training over the same areas. Then the main wave will lift through the area Monday night through Tue with the last round of heavy thunderstorms. These storms will move over the same areas with, again, locally heavy rainfall. Rainfall amounts will likely exceed 2 inches in around along and south of I-70 Mon night through Tue. This heavy rainfall will be on top of the heavy rain that occurs Sun night through Mon. So, total potential rainfall in southeast IL, along and south of I-70 will range from 5 to 6 inches, Sunday night through Tuesday. Isolated higher amounts will be possible through the period given the high PW values and possible training storms. Therefore, the Flash Flood Watch has been extended in time, now ending at 12Z Tuesday morning. Two more counties have also been added, Clark and Cumberland, given the model trend of shifting some of the heavier qpf north with the main wave moves through Monday night. Once this frontal boundary and mid level wave moves out of the area, the pattern changes some and drier weather is expected over parts of the CWA for the rest of the coming week. However, with the mid level flow becoming more northwest, small chances of precip will still be needed in some areas of the CWA through the week. Then another active wave looks to move into the area for the end of the week and the beginning of the weekend. Therefore more showers and storms will be possible. Temps will be cooler through the first half of the week, but with all the moisture, muggy conditions will be likely.
