.SYNOPSIS...
A slow moving cold front is expected to push in from the north late
tonight into Friday. This front will become stationary just to the
south of the region and will linger into the weekend. Another weak
cold front is forecast to reach the forecast area early next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
As of 140 AM EDT, Convection diminishing as it moves into the more
stable air mass across the area. However, expect some activity to
linger through the night. Winds associated with the strong gust
front moving SW across the area are diminishing, but some low end
gusts are likely as it moves through. Have updated temps and dew
points based on latest observations, generally cooler north and
warmer south.

The existing pre-frontal boundary, approaching front, pooling
moisture, and enhanced dynamic and thermodynamic environment all
suggest strong to severe thunderstorms will be placed more solidly
over our region on Friday. Continued high DCAPE air suggests that
downbursts will occur and high precipitable water values of 1.5 to 2
inches suggests the potential for isolated flooding anywhere that
training of storms may occur. Consensus temperature guidance has
been followed for Friday in the continued warm and muggy airmass.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 130 PM Thu: Upper atmospheric conditions will gradually become
less favorable for convection Fri night into Sat as trough axis moves
offshore, and ridge builds over the lower Mississippi Valley and
vicinity. Surface low also gradually moves off to the east following
this progression, with a cold front pushing south across the area
behind it. Conditions are progged to be considerably less unstable
Saturday as a result, particularly in light of a midlevel subsidence
inversion, and as a somewhat drier NE flow persists over the CWFA.
PoPs are capped at slight chance over the Piedmont. However the
easterly flow is expected to provide a boost to updrafts along the
Blue Ridge, so we will continue to advertise PoPs in the chance range
there. Though dewpoints are expected to be a few degrees lower than
those Friday acrs the area, temps will not be impacted much over the
Upstate and NE GA. Heat indices top out around 100 at most, in
Elbert-Abbeville-Greenwood counties.

Confluence downstream of the ridge will allow sfc high pressure to
build over the northeastern CONUS Saturday night and Sunday. This
reinforces easterly flow across the Carolinas, and weakens upper
lapse rates particularly over the eastern third of the FA. Model CAPE
is near zero along/east of I-77, so no PoPs will be advertised there.
Temps will return to normal.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 145 PM Thursday...we are most concerned with two days in
particular out in the medium range, both dealing with frontal
passages, one early in the week and one late in the week. The upper
pattern is expected to evolve early in the week such that the broad
upper ridge across the Deep South will migrate wwd/reamplify over
the Rockies, which means a new upper trof will be able to amplify
over the east.  The operational guidance is at odds with the timing
of the first one, a cold front dropping down from the NW on Monday
or Tuesday. The guidance signals that Monday might be the more
important day as a weak short wave dives down from the NW late in
the day. The models respond to the greatly improved boundary layer
instability by developing convection by the afternoon. A chance of
precip looks like a good bet, starting early in the day, and ramping
up into the likely range over the higher terrain in the afternoon.
The actual surface boundary, or what would be the edge of the drier
air, might not actually cross the region until Tuesday, particularly
if the ECMWF is correct. Wednesday looks like a quiet day with some
drier air in place, which probably means limiting the fcst to
isolated convection over the mtns. By Thursday, the old boundary
should have washed out and the surface high off the southeast coast
should re-exert its influence, leading to an increased chance of
showers/storms. Have limited precip to the chance range for now,
being that it is day 7. Temps will be typical of early Summer...a
bit above climo thru the period.

.AVIATION /06Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
At KCLT, gusty winds associated with the gust front have diminished
but NE wind will continue through the early morning. Will be some
lingering showers through early morning as well. Do not expect any
restrictions unless a cell moves across the airfield. Another round
of TSTMs is more likely on Friday as the moisture pools ahead of an
advancing cold front across the western Carolinas. Will feature VCSH
during the afternoon along with a PROB30 for the peak period 17Z to
23Z. Winds should return to SW after daybreak and remain there until
the front moves south during the evening when they turn northerly.
Winds may become quite gusty around any thunderstorms through the
period.

Elsewhere, convective chances appear best early this morning at KAVL
and KHKY. The NE winds behind the gust front should reach KGSP and
KGMU, and possibly KAND. Winds return to W to SW after daybreak,
then turn NW during the evening. Winds remain NNW at KAVL through
the period. Have PROB30 in place all sites during the the best
heating as moisture pools ahead of an approaching cold front. Winds
may become quite gusty around any thunderstorms through the period.

Outlook: Diurnal convection will persist mainly over the mountains
through the weekend. Brief restrictions will be possible under any
convection and also during the early morning hours in locations
where rain fell the previous day. Chances for early morning mountain
valley fog and low stratus will also gradually increase. Tstm
coverage will increase again early next week ahead of a cold front
approaching from the northwest.
