.SYNOPSIS...
Stalled frontal boundary will weaken over North Carolina tonight,
as a cold front approaches from the west. The front will cross the
area early Friday, ushering in drier conditions for the weekend.
Warm high pressure gradually builds back in toward the middle of
next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 230 PM Wednesday...satellite imagery continues to show
extensive mid/high level convective debris across the central and
nrn mountains of NC, the NC Foothills, and the western Piedmont. The
convective debris keeps getting reinforced from the NW, so I am
beginning to think convection won't amount to much east of I-26 and
north of the NC/SC border. Meanwhile...as expected...the debris has
left us a diffuse cloudy/clear boundary, and south/west of that
boundary we have destabilized to the point that deep convection has
developed. SPC mesoanalysis shows sbCAPE on the order of 2000 J/kg
and dCAPE on the order of 1000 J/kg, while shear is minimal. Think
the area S/W of I-26 will see scattered strong to severe storms thru
the late afternoon/early eve. Precip chances have been adjusted a
bit to account for this. Temp trends will be modulated by thicker
cloud cover and movement of precip.
Otherwise...after the deeper convection wanes with loss of
heating... expect a fairly quiet evening as mid/upper forcing is
also lost with the passage of what amounts to a short wave mid/upper
ridge tonight. Min temps will remain mild.
Expect Thursday to be another convectively active day...after a
time. The morning might be continued fairly quiet if we have some
convective debris again. Another weak short wave is expected to
traverse the region during the day, which will provide a decent
environment that will at least not be unfavorable for deep
convection...eventually. Model guidance suggests the better sbCAPE
will be to our west closer to the better moisture advection ahead of
the cold front, but enough buoyancy is suggested to warrant the
Marginal Risk seen in the Day 2. Temps will be seasonally warm
again.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 225 PM Wednesday...The models are in pretty good agreement
on a cold front roughly along the Blue Ridge at 12z Friday. The
front then pushes east across the Piedmont by 18z such that any
frontal convection is expected to be mostly east of the area by
peak heating. I have PoPs maximized at 12z, then taper off to less
than slight chance by sunset. Temps will be near normal in the
mtns and a category above normal in the piedmont.
Friday night thru Sunday...an upper trough digs across the eastern
CONUS with a reinforcing cold front crossing the CWFA Saturday
night. Other than a few NW flow upslope showers along the TN border,
the weekend looks dry. Temps will continue a cooling trend, down to
a category below normal for Sunday.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 230 PM Wednesday...the eastern CONUS upper trough will lift
out and be replaced by ridging building in across the Southeast. An
east-west oriented frontal boundary will begin to become activated,
mainly to our west in response to a trough digging across the
southern Rockies. Subtropical high pressure will become established
off the Mid-Atlantic coast thru midweek...resulting in persistent
southerly to southwesterly flow increasing moisture and bringing
temps back above normal.

.AVIATION /19Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
At KCLT...satellite imagery shows extensive mid/high level
convective debris, while observations reveal a scattered low cloud
underneath. An old outflow boundary has moved past the site which
has brought winds around light from the NW. This may continue for
the first few hours, but think that if the high clouds thin and we
break out the low clouds, the wind will come around to SW. This has
been indicated in the new TAF. The mesoscale models continue to
suggest that activity over the NC mountains will develop along/ride
down the cloudy/clear boundary and over the CLT metro area in the
late afternoon. Have kept the TEMPO group for thunder accordingly,
along with an occasional NW wind, but the confidence in this
happening is starting to wane. Either way, the convection should be
gone by 00Z, after which more convective debris is expected. Wind is
forecast to shift back around to light NW in the pre-dawn hours on
Thursday. A fog restriction may develop around daybreak Thursday if
precip falls later today. This was left out for now because of high
uncertainty.
Elsewhere...KHKY will remain under the convective debris through the
rest of the day. Expect the IFR ceiling to end quickly. KAVL will be
on the edge and should see a few storms nearby. The Upstate airports
have the best chance at seeing thunderstorms and one is headed
toward KAND at TAF issuance time. The storms should fade quickly
with sunset. Similar to KCLT, fog may be added for early Thursday
morning at any site that has precip later today.
Outlook...scattered showers and thunderstorms and associated flight
restrictions are possible Thursday afternoon and Friday...as a cold
front pushes across the area. Drier weather and VFR conditions
should return for the weekend.
