.SYNOPSIS...
A front will remain stalled to our south through mid week. On
Thursday, a back door cold front will approach the region from the
north, with yet another cold front reaching the mountains late in
the weekend.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 245 PM EDT, convection continues to develop over the eastern
Upstate along the stalled frontal boundary. Expect this convection
to spread west along the boundary through the afternoon. The
convection may also spread north into the NC Southern Piedmont
before dissipating. May also be some convection along along the Blue
Ridge in the continued upslope flow. A few strong storms may develop
along the boundary where very high DCAPE values linger into early
evening. Isolated showers may linger through the night but should
diminish with time. Patchy dense mountain valley fog is expected
with low clouds possibly developing outside of the mountains. Lows
will be 5 to 10 degrees above normal.
The surface ridge over the area should become a little stronger
Tuesday with the frontal zone moving south or dissipating. This
should push the better instability and moisture to the western CWFA.
Scattered convection should develop over the mountains, western
Upstate and NE GA with isolated convection elsewhere. DCAPE should
be lower yielding at best isolated strong storms. Highs should be
near to a couple of degrees above normal.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 230 PM EDT Monday: The short term period kicks off Tuesday
evening amidst flat upper ridging across the southeast, while
a trof digs southward out of Ontario across the upper Midwest
and Great Lakes region. At the surface, weakening high pressure
prevails off the northeast coast while an old stationary front
remains draped across the Midlands of SC. Pattern evolution
through the period features the return of moist southerly flow
across northeast GA and the western Carolinas on Wednesday, all
ahead of a cold front on Thursday. As for Wednesday, given the
developing southerly flow, moist advection will prevail off the
western Atlantic, possibly enhanced to some degree by the weak
tropical circulation sliding across north FL into southeast GA.
As such, fcst soundings exhibit modest instability across the
southern tier of the cwfa where moisture and heating are maximized,
all supportive of showers and thunderstorms. As stated above, a
cold front will make a run at the southern Appalachians on Thursday,
slowing and possibly stalling atop the region into the end of the
fcst period while sprawling high pressure builds to the north.
Showers and thunderstorms will once again be possible ahead of the
front in the most unstable airmass, as well as along the boundary
where sfc convergence is maximized.
As for the fcst, chance pops on Wednesday will be focused across
the southern region of the cwfa, as well as atop the NC high terrain
where veered llv flow could promote better upsloping. Thursday will
be highlighted by widespread chance pops as the front intrudes and
possibly slows/stalls atop northeast GA and the western Carolinas.
Temperatures through the period will remain above normal levels.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
At 150 PM Monday: An upper level ridge axis will traverse the east
coast through Sat before an H5 s/w digs into the Midwest and
advances toward the the CWFA late Sun. The models are at odds with
the strength and configuration with the amount of energy associated
with the s/w with the GFS being more dynamic. In fact...the GFS
develops a secondary srn s/w as the main trof axis reaches the
Appalachians. Thus...the sfc reflections...mainly the development
and strength of a late period cold front...vary sigfntly. So...will
make little change to the chance/likely pops Sun beginning aft 18z
and continuing thru 06z Mon. This could create some hydro concerns
across the higher terrain...however it/s too early to mention
explicitly and this scenario will be monitored over the next several
fcst packages.
The weather before Sun will be rather seasonal...as a transient or
insitu wedge develops in good e/ly Atl moisture flux. This will
warrant chance pops across the CFWA with the best chances and
nocturnal continuation occurring across the favored upslope
escarpment regions. Max temps will begin the period right around
normal and perhaps bump up a cat or so through Mon. In the
persistent moist environ...mins will remain a few degrees above
normal.

.AVIATION /19Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
At KCLT: Convection has formed along the stalled frontal zone to the
south and southwest of the airfield. This activity is slowly
drifting northward and may move over during the 20z to 00z time
frame. Have included a TEMPO with variable winds and MVFR conditions
to cover. Winds should also turn ESE then. Convection ends this
evening with winds returning to ENE and low VFR cigs. Could be
another round of MVFR cigs overnight and early Tuesday, but chance
is uncertain enough to just go with SCT MVFR clouds for now. ENE
winds continue through the morning.
Elsewhere: Similar conditions to KCLT, but with better chances of
convection for the SC sites and less chance for NC. MVFR more likely
overnight, with IFR likely at KAVL. KAVL will see SSE wind this
afternoon then light and variable through the rest of the period.
Outlook: The front will remain stalled to the south of the forecast
area, and will keep a chance for SHRA/TSRA Tuesday afternoon.
Another front will approach from the NW on Wednesday, possibly
reaching the area on Thursday.
